SCOTUS holds that the EPA *cannot* order cities to maintain acceptable water quality standards by limiting the discharge—usually sewage—that they dump into nearby bodies of water (like oceans and bays). The four women justices, dissenting, say that's ridiculous. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24p...

The U.S. NWS is a truly world-class meteorological predictive service, perhaps singularly so. Its cost of operation is only ~$3-4/yr per taxpayer—equivalent to a single cup of coffee—and yields a truly remarkable return on investment (at least 10 to 1, and perhaps 100 to 1).

"If the allegations . . . are true, it displays a brazen disregard for appropriate safety oversight. No industry polices itself well, so strong and effective regulators, including inspectors, are necessary to keep our communities safe." -- @pstrust.bsky.social

In 2023, federal pipeline agency PHMSA sent inspectors to check on Denbury & its contractor.
We now learned that PHMSA is seeking a $2 million fine for a pattern of aggressive interference with safety inspections, including physically blocking inspectors, verbal assaults, and lying.

Background: In 2020, a CO2 pipeline ruptured in rural Satartia, MS.
CO2 leaks can spread far & be deadly. The leak caused hundreds of evacuations, 45 hospitalizations, and led PHMSA to re-do its safety regulations.
This incident (and reporting) are important.

Looks like the EPA's Air Quality Index data have been taken offline too.
If there are other environmental/climate data that seem to be down, please let me know; was expecting to learn of more of these last week. Wondering if this is the next shoe to drop.

Notable that the email went to EPA staff hired within the past year with probationary status?
Seems like a way for Trump/Elon to rack up # of fed employees axed, in a low-hanging fruit way
