Io and Ganymede, moons of Jupiter, from the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera For Surveys' now-defunct High Resolution Channel.

These are real images of exoplanets. Four super-Jupiters, imaged 10 times over 12 years around a star 133 lightyears away. These are real, giant worlds, out there in the dark. And we can see them.

Neptune, despite being a ice giant, has some bad habits, such as not brushing its teeth. Here we see one that has fallen out. Proteus, moon of Neptune, from Voyager 2 in 1989.

This is Ganymede—the largest satellite in the Solar System. It orbits Jupiter, it's bigger than Mercury, and it has a subsurface ocean. The average ocean depth on Earth is 3.7 km. The ocean within Ganymede is as much as NINE HUNDRED km deep.

Vesta is the 2nd largest asteroid and the parent body to many asteroid family members and meteorites that made their way to Earth. It was the target of NASA's Dawn mission, which orbited it for 14 months in 2011-2012. It's a leftover from the era of planet formation. But what kind of leftover? 1/7

Another image from that beautiful morning at the Mont Saint Michel… To morrow I’m starting another photo tour in Tuscany, so probably I’ll get quiet here again… Don’t forget me 😆! Will be back soon enough ✌️

This is a new image from #JWST. The bright points with spikes are stars in the Milky Way. Everything else is a galaxy. Everything. Else. Is. A. Galaxy.

The rocky, flat Utopia Planitia from the Viking 2 lander, with distant hills visible on the horizon. This was constructed using images taken with similar illumination between 1976 and 1978. The information they had to plan the landing suggested a safe landing site. It was not, though luck prevailed.

Fun fact: all of the other planets in the Solar System—and Pluto too—lined up edge-to-edge (not including any rings) could fit between Earth and the Moon

Celebrate Hubble’s 35th year in orbit! In honor of the legendary space telescope that redefined the universe, NASA released an assortment of observations recently taken by Hubble, including data used in this video of Mars at the start of Martian spring. (1/5) 🧵 🧪 🔭

Pluto and Charon from the Hubble Space Telescope on March 4, 1996, using the Faint Object Camera. It was taken as a part of "Live From the Solar System," a NASA event where high school students could participate over the nascent internet. I was one of them. More recently, I processed the dataset.

The cantaloupe terrain of Triton, moon of Neptune, seen from Voyager 2 at about 360 meters/pixel in 1989. These two frames constitute humanity's highest resolution views of Triton, although the lower frame is somewhat smeared (I have corrected this as much as possible).

Our rising seas. This is only going to get harder to ignore. This NASA visualization was created by svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/5520/
