Theologian, violist, knower of things and spinner of plates. I strive against chaos. Trying to overcome false dichotomies: heart and head, Baroque and Romantic, Schleiermacher and Barth. More Bach please, and Brahms. And DSCH too.

Somewhat echoing what Prof. Rowell said so well, I use the languages (esp Gk) to help me ask questions, prompt me to go "Ooh! What's that about?" Curiosity, openness. And I try never to take my interpretive decisions at this point as final, but test them along other commentaries.

Thank you! If I had voted (which because of my role I typically do not) I would have vote 'no'. Middle Assemblies is such a weird, bureaucratic sounding name.

as long it's not the Eric M@t@#@s version of Bonhoeffer.

Many years ago, I taught a class in World Religions; one of the essay topics I assigned: compare & contrast the birth narratives of Jesus and the Buddha.

I think I'm just DONE with people saying to me (for like ~40 years) "I don't like [x]" when I'm enjoying & even *performing* [x] ... X being, e.g., Brahms, Bach, Hindemith, "modern classical"

When I watched it, I knew there was a *whole lot* of meaning & context conveyed that I wasn't getting, & I want to understand! *AND* I recognized so much artistry of a kind _very_ different from what I work in. I truly appreciated it.

I love how much joy people get from being immersed in live music. Audiences are great! There's this electricity about being involved and connected. I think the deep physicality of sound is a big part of it.

To be serious, they will be so blessed to have you. It's scary getting back on the preaching bike after some time away, as things once well practiced feel less familiar. And it reaches down to and uncovers so much. I hope you receive much blessing in all of it.

Tammi had a mid 80s Accord to start. Then from 2010 on I've had 3 year leases, all new cars. First one was an Accord (w manual transmission!), the Civics until late May when I got a CRV hybrid.

I still find sooo funny the repeated "blap blahhh" of the trombone (?) in the first my movement!

It's amazing that upstate NY public schools, in the early '70s, offered strings in 3rd grade and winds/brass in 4th!

So, yeah, there's a lot in there.

I started on viola, which is actually not the norm. (Most violists start on violin.) Funny/telling story: String teacher came to general music class (3rd grade) to stir up interest. I wanted to take viola bc it was different ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ˜Š. ... Dear reader: This was fall of 1972.

(But I'm just a little sad that you weren't even a little interested in the viola!)
