Today’s research mystery: why would an eighteenth century lease mandate the drinking of a barrel of ale at a particular spot ‘and not elsewhere’ in Co Down. Registry of Deeds collection on @virtualtreasury.bsky.social keeps giving. Also bring back this tradition

Oooh- my @virtualtreasury.bsky.social fun find for this morning is a woman, Agnes White, inheriting land from her relative, Emma, daughter of Adam White, in Co. Meath in 1356. Lovely tangled landholding here, and a rare example of a woman inheriting from a female relative in these sources.

Updated CFP for ‘Ireland and the American Revolution’, a conference to be held @tlrhub.bsky.social on the 9-10 October 2025.

Looking for some case studies in the Registry of Deeds for something I am writing and found a Patrick Walsh as the beneficiary of a will in 1709! virtualtreasury.ie/item/ROD-PR-... @virtualtreasury.bsky.social

Funded PhD opportunity: School of History and Geography, DCU. I am happy to discuss this opportunity with any prospective PhD student who would like to work in the area of women and gender in Ireland - later nineteenth century to 1980s.

The first major attempt to ‘alter’ the penal laws in eighteenth-century Ireland came in 1778. The debates over Catholic Relief that summer run to around 700 pages in the Cavendish transcripts beginning in vol. 10, but things really get going in vol. 11: virtualtreasury.ie/item/LOC-MSS...

Tomorrow! In person and online. Magna Carta: New Discoveries. Thought there was nothing new to learn or say about this historic document? Think again! visit.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/event/jan25/...

#YearoftheSnake Belfast, 1805: in a curious reversal of Patrick's policy, a snake found its way to Ireland and paid a visit to the home of barrister / longtime informer within the United Irishmen Leonard McNally (DIB: bit.ly/4hfSht0), presumably sent by an enemy! virtualtreasury.ie/item/NAI-CSO...

Very nice! I'll be giving a talk on @virtualtreasury.bsky.social at Rootstech in March. #GenHour

Many of the Stormont files declassified today are exceptionally bland. Gone are the candid views, blunt assessments and granular detail of decades past. This is likely due to two factors: The growing use of email and the looming Freedom of Information Act.

Great to see papers from Limerick to London to Jersey pick up this good news story. 📖👀 Read about Sarah Graham's work on another very early volume www.virtualtreasury.ie/hidden-stori... Watch here 🎞️ www.youtube.com/watch?v=baFt... The power of strong partnership 😀 👍 (@DeptCultureIRL .X)
