NEW: Just 6% of Gen Z say they actually want a dictator – not over half, as has been recently claimed. Our study finds only a very small minority of 13-27-yr-olds really feel this way, when their views and interpretations are tested with different questioning approaches 🧵⬇️

🧵 I find myself returning to Benjamin Haddad's observation last October that "We cannot leave the security of Europe in the hands of voters in Wisconsin every four years". That's when the penny dropped for me (admittedly too late). I wonder now: when should it have dropped for European leaders? /1

Suggestions for £150ish Android tablet for my dad? Ideally ten-inch or so screen. Just needs to be good enough for browser based stuff and basic apps

This thread is a public service.

It's also worth noting that much US aid hasn't left the country: arms producers have been major beneficiaries. Assuredly, one could argue this is funding that could have been strategically invested elsewhere in the US economy, but Trump playing the victim rings very hollow indeed.

Reality check. Thank you, Financial Times.

Better advertising to come, but I’m excited to announce that registration is now live for our very heavily subsidised Teaching Indigenous Histories & Perspectives Conference on 28 June! Bursaries for travel are available plus free follow-up support. Please do share with all your teacher networks!

I'm very fond of the FT's coverage, but I find this a very strange take. Zelenskyy has displayed remarkable diplomatic talent in recent years; Trump simply isn't a good-faith actor, and while Macron and Starmer have succeeded in keeping him on side for now, it's not a like-for-like situation at all.

I find myself returning to this question.

🧵 🗃️ In 1683, Marseille's Chamber of Commerce asked their agent in Paris to send them the Gazette de France every week hot off the press. When the Chamber complained these copies weren't reaching them, the agent went to the post office to complain, but made an unexpected discovery... /1

There can be no agreement now, and Europe must ensure Ukraine does not need one.

Now watching Trump yell at Zelensky. And Vance talk to him like he's a toddler. This is a shameful moment for United States diplomacy. It will be hard to recover from this.

Some GOOD news... 🦫 #beavers #waterways #biodioversity #wildlife #nature www.theguardian.com/environment/...

A full-time, open-ended lectureship in Ancient History at Leeds! It's a different department to me but your duties will still include being asked interminable questions about ancient weirdos by me, your colleague with a healthy interest.

🧵 A question for French historians! An agent petitions the provincial intendant to require Marseille's Chamber of Commerce to reimburse his expenses, but the Chamber asserts he hadn't even informed the Chamber that he *had* any expenses... /1

Delighted that the English version of my article on the lost letters of the Galatée ship just came out, with a wonderful translation by @teaphaine.bsky.social www.cambridge.org/core/journal... @annaleshss.bsky.social

“The twelve most terrifying words in the English language are ‘I work in tech and we're here to make your life better'.”

Preliminary thoughts on the German election results so far: 1) Chasing the far right vote by demagoguing on migration has brought the CDU/CSU it's second worst performance in history. It's in first place, but it's a weaker result than anything Merkel posted.

To my mind, being an historian is about acknowledging and navigating the depths of one's own ignorance. I think there is something about this that is deeply alien to some outside the profession who cannot fathom the mentality of constantly traversing the shifting sands of the past and the present.

"Trump’s proposed partnership aligns the interest of the American people with those of the people of Ukraine." Scott Bessent writes in the FT. A lot of talk of "turbocharging" the Ukrainian economy. I don't feel like the economy is its main problem? Link free for first 300 on.ft.com/3XdfynF
