All photos taken on different days recently. I could get used to this...

A post run pint goes down quite well in this weather ☀️

An anticyclone will be dominating the weather for the rest of the week. Freezing overnight conditions will be followed by balmy daytime temperatures of 10-12°C in Exeter. Beautiful!

I have passed my PhD viva with minor corrections :)

Nice bit of cumulonimbus today south of Exeter, feeling warm in the sunshine with temperatures around 15°C.

Just over a week until my PhD viva.

Simulation of the light intensity during sunrise/sunset. The colour scale automatically adjusts each frame. This was simulated assuming fairly dusty conditions (quite a lot of Mie scattering, which produces the haze around the sun).

Strange to see rain in Exeter today despite a region of relatively high pressure at 1041 hPa.

Always loved this chart from the Met Office comparing the daily air temperature in London in February 2018 and 2019. From a chilly 0°C first thing to a balmy 21°C in the afternoon, don't see that very often in London!

The last two days have been great in Exeter. Feeling springlike in the mild sunshine and calm conditions. Great conditions for seeing the planets and to top it all off I managed to submit my PhD thesis today!

Spring in Exeter. A few more months to go...

Travelling back from Scotland today after visiting family. Some stunning winter weather! Snow, ice days and freezing fog. Amazing to have a day not exceeding freezing again.

It's been a bit bleak here with freezing fog all day. Brightening up now but struggling to get above -2°C. A proper winter day.

Currently -2.1°C here. Think it will struggle to get above freezing all day...

A dusting of overnight snow here near Perth. Travelled to Edinburgh today and it's a stunner! 1°C currently.

Still a few nutty runs here near Perth with the coldest MOGREPS member going for -18.2°C on the 2nd. A very cold few days with temperatures really struggling to get much above 0°C.

A few MOGREPS runs getting close to -18°C (0°F) here in Perth next week. A bit nippy 🥶❄️

Merry Christmas!

Up in Scotland for the next week or so for Christmas. Looking increasingly cold and potentially snowy into the new year. Nippy!

The second part of my blog on weather forecasting is out on Medium. Here I give an introduction to a crucial component of weather forecasts - uncertainty. medium.com/@oliverlewis...

14 years since the coldest December in living memory. Temperatures in the UK were an enormous 5.1°C below the 1991-2020 mean, with incredible satellite imagery showing much of the UK frozen solid. I was only 10 years old at the time, but I was astonished by the low temperatures! Truly arctic.

I'm trying to expand my network and to share my experience - if anyone is working in the field or would like to learn more about data assimilation (a crucial part of weather forecasts, incorporating observations) please like this post so I can gauge interest and follow people!
