Makes a nice change!

An exceptional synoptic pattern. There is one more ingredient to this snowy recipe, and it may well be in stock...

Really interesting, thanks for sharing. Looks like summer variation is still significantly dampened compared to winter time variation?

I suppose the first ice-free Arctic summer could see this rise quite significantly then? Could it be another June 2023 north Atlantic style event where temperatures soar way higher than anytime before?

Interesting the lack of variability in the summer. Is this largely due to solar energy melting sea ice rather than warming the surface?

Yep just interesting to see the disconnect between tropospheric and stratospheric annual temperatures.

Interesting how the mean annual cycle closely follows the seasonal cycle (i.e. max temperatures occurring very close to the solstice) whereas closer to the surface a significant delay of over a month is present. Similar to the pattern seen on Mars.

Thanks Simon! Will certainly be quite a change compared to Exeter. Although the 20% cut in air pressure will be an interesting challenge when running on the trails! Remarkable just last week they saw -25°C, yet this coming weekend looks closer to 18°C. Now that's variability!

Groan, winters in the UK never get any easier. Can't wait for my move to the US for some proper sunshine!

I've actually got about half the cost of the train tickets back these last few months thanks to hour+ delays

Hasn't been a bad month at all. Despite being a cold month then mild parts haven't been a total washout, in fact this week we exceeded 12°C with calm sunshine - like spring! Can see the low cloud to the east though.

Looks like it, saw similar in Scotland in October

That's incredible cold.

Interesting to see the first every May with a CET in the 14s I believe...

Definitely felt a "cosmic" kind of awe if that's what it's called... just the immense size of it! I've seen videos but nothing captures truly how huge it is. Crazy, will never forget that.

Nice graphic!

Impressive high temperatures for a pretty average summer! May was an impressive month too, definitely remember quite a few lovely days and of course the incredible aurora!

10-20 cm across all of Scotland too? Seems quite a lot considering it shouldn't be heavy precipitation much north of Glasgow/Edinburgh surely?

I'll be on the lookout!

Interesting how relatively dull 1976 was.

How's it looking for Edinburgh? Met Office forecasting rain on Sunday.

ECMWF more of the same, highs of around -7°C on the weekend but nights not as cold.

GFS is bitterly cold with heavy snow on New Year's Day.

Yeah probably unlikely but shows the potential! A bit too cold for me haha

Déjà vu, swear we had exactly the same start to November!

I'm not sure if you hear it much, but I hope you realise just how much students appreciate this. It's easy to forget how tough and aimless it can feel being a PhD student starting off their career in science with little contact with their advisor.
