My grandfather escaped going down the pit by enlisting in the army. Sadly his brothers didn’t and went down the pit. None of them lived long enough to retire. My grandad made it to 56, his brothers didn’t even reach 50.

The 14th Amendment gives rights to legal due process (and equal protection of the laws) to "any person." Not to any citizen or even any legal resident. When that Amendment wanted to talk about only citizens it did, as in the immediate previous sentence. But here it talks about any person.
