Kudos to Pelley and staff for being honest.

Today's Berardelli Bonus... With hurricane season just weeks away, the Atlantic Main Development region looks VERY different than it did last year at this time. It is much cooler. While it's only one factor, it's certainly a relief compared to the feeling last April.

Tied a record today at 93 in Tampa. More impressive, it’s the 8th 90 degree day this April, breaking the record for most 90s in April. And we will see a few more before May! Also it’s the 2nd earliest we’ve reached 93. The earliest was 94 earlier this month!!

Major European institutes join race to save US science data. Thank goodness! www.nature.com/articles/d41...

I just included a new graphic on my climate indicators page showing average yearly temperatures for the contiguous United States (CONUS) from 1895 to 2024. This visualization will now be updated annually at zacklabe.com/climate-chan.... Data is from NOAA NClimGrid.

The Extreme Weather Report, April 24, 2025: This is your weather at 1.5°C/2.7°F of global warming from burning oil, gas, and coal. #extremeweather #weathersky #wx #news

Wait. What? Gutting GFDL?

For Earth Day I did a series of segments explaining the relationship between global heating and greenhouse gases. Today CO2 levels are higher than in millions of years, and Earth temps have jumped almost 3 degrees F. Thanks Climate Central and Ed Hawkins for the GFX!

Six "key truths" about climate change: -It's real -It's us -Experts agree -It's bad -Others care -There's hope People who understand these truths are more likely to become part of the solution. Spread the word. link.springer.com/article/10.1... @mason4c.bsky.social @yaleclimatecomm.bsky.social

Can scientists trace climate losses back to the emissions from individual fossil fuel companies? Yes, we can. The inimitable @ccallahan45.bsky.social and I provide an 'end-to-end' attribution framework that can be applied in many climate accountability contexts: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Check out how the anchors of CBS Evening News ended their broadcast tonight:

Since the dawn of the industrial revolution, a couple of hundred years ago, greenhouse gas forcing - mainly from burning fossil fuels - has more than doubled. Meaning that the ability of the atmosphere to trap heat has significantly increased. Thanks Leon Simons for the graphic!

Scientists using the James Webb Space Telescope have obtained what they call the strongest signs of possible life beyond our solar system, detecting in an alien planet's atmosphere the chemical fingerprints of gases produced only by biological processes reut.rs/43XJ7Oe

In today's Berardelli Bonus... CopernicusECMWF put out its March state of the climate report showing March 2025 was the 2nd warmest March on record (warmest 2024). Bigger picture shows that society's efforts are falling far short to limit heating/ impacts from emissions.

In today's Berardelli Bonus... A sneak peak at how active the upcoming hurricane season may be based on the April computer model ensemble guidance for summer. Hint: it looks very different than last year at this time. But who knows how it will turn out. Thanks @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social

NOAA just fired us, again 🤡 Retroactive to February 🤡

The video in this montage is extraordinary- and not in a good way. “Historic” life-changing flooding in so many spots. We have irreversibly changed our planet in ways that will compound and debilitate. (On a lighter note, I apparently made a cameo)

From April 2-9, NWS Forecast Offices issued: • 1046 Severe T-Storm Warnings • 485 Tornado Warnings • 313 Flash Flood Warnings This is the third most Severe T-Storm + Tornado Warnings issued through April 9 on record 2025 leads with the number of Valid Time Event Coding (VTEC) products to date

In today's Berardelli Bonus...The ongoing flood event in the nation's middle is another example of a historic and very "rare" event. 1000 yr rain events are typically restricted to a very isolated area but @jjrenie.bsky.social map shows just how widespread it was. 1/

Huge honor & huge thanks to @edhawkins.org for including me as an author on his paper: “Warming Stripes spark climate conversations: from the ocean to the stratosphere” I’m officially a published author! It’s been exciting being a part of #ShowYourStripes! journals.ametsoc.org/downloadpdf/...

BREAKING: In a reversal, all NOAA Research sites will now remain online with "no interruption in service," according to the agency. NOAA had previously moved to cancel the research division's cloud services contract. Story for @bloomberg.com (free link): www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Today's Berardelli Bonus: Final report on Hurricane Milton is out. Tied for the 4th strongest Atlantic hurricane on record by pressure. It did a # on the Bay Area with 100 mph wind gusts, 20" of rain (a 1-500 year event), max 10 ft of surge and it was a prolific tornado producer!

Relief is on the way! We still have to get through this weekend with record heat and highs near 90, but how's about 70s by Tuesday??

CSU Hurricane forecast calls for an above average season. Should be no surprise given the last decade. El Niño Southern Oscillation forecast to be neutral and typically that means more storms and more landfalls. Plus most of Atlantic is still warm (not as warm as last year)

Ouch! Via WFLA News Channel 8 “Dow drops 1,500 as US stock market leads a worldwide sell-off following Trump’s tariff shock” www.wfla.com/news/nationa...

“90 degree days are not just coming earlier, there are a whole lot more of them. In the 1970s, Tampa used to average around 60 90-degree days per year. But now it is now closer to 120. In other words, we now have double the number!” www.wfla.com/weather/reco...

Wow. Hit 94 in Tampa. Earliest, by 27 days, that we have hit 94! (26 days earlier than our earliest 93). @WFLA

Record high eclipsed. 92 at the airport in Tampa. This is ~35 days earlier than the long term average first 90 degree day. About 20 days earlier than the modern first 90 degree day. And about 50 days earlier than the early 1900s average. It's not coincidence its climate change.

Record heat today through Friday. Here are some numbers we need to beat. Stay cool!

Starting tomorrow a potentially "catastrophic" flood is forecast. Areas of MO & AR are in a "PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION" Flood watch. The bullseye is forecast to get 10-15" of rain. This image shows the NOAA "Flood Outlook" for rivers. Magenta = Major. (>50% exceeding). 1-in-100 year event

In today’s Berardelli Bonus… 90 arrives in Tampa tomorrow, as a very very early season heatwave kicks in thru the weekend. Our first 90 degree day is 50 days earlier than it was a century ago and we now have 2X more 90 degree days than we did in the 1970s (from 60 to 120) due to climate change

It's way too early... but its our reality for the next few days. Many records will fall and feels like temps, because of fairly humid air, will be in the mid 90s! Early next week cooler weather returns!

This is no joke! One month from now, sulphur emissions over the Mediterranean will be reduced by another 80%. This will further accelerate regional warming and lead to more extreme droughts, heatwaves, and flash floods.

Summer in early April. Record highs possible in Tampa Wednesday-Friday. Feels like 95. Our first 90 degree day will come about a month early. Here's the good news... while it will stay hot over the weekend, early next week the heat will break with upper 70s possible next Tuesday.

"Ain't Nobody Got Time for That" was my first reaction to the upcoming heatwave. The first 90 day in Tampa used to arrive in late May (100 years ago) But more recently the average is the 3rd week of April... about 35 days sooner. This spring we are likely to see it in a few days!

30 April 2025 is the last day for many colleagues I know.... Seems like the implosion of NWS will follow shortly after.

BYD hit 5th globally in 2024, selling 4.27M cars (+41.3% YoY), surpassing GM, Ford & Honda, crushing Tesla in total NEVs. Overseas sales soared 71.9% to 417K. Vertical integration, global expansion & R&D dominance fuel BYD’s rise. 2025 target: 5-6M, with overseas sales set to double to 800K. 🚀 #BEV
