i tell this story every time these old photos come up but: I remember in film school one of my classmates asked what about film chemistry in the 1970s caused everything shot in NYC to look so brown and grimy and our professor was like "that wasn't the film, that's just what the air looked like here"

“The thing that I can’t get over is that the actual richest man in the world directed my fucking firing. I make $50k a year and work to keep drinking water safe. The richest man in the world decided that was an expense too great for the American taxpayer.”

Every little thing Elon Musk touches is now a massive conflict of interest. @timothypmurphy.bsky.social on the sheer scope of Musk's entanglements—from Starlink, X, and Tesla to foreign raw materials and backchannels with heads of state: bit.ly/3WYI2RK

The madness of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Trump May have tried to fire a bunch of IGs anyhow, but this makes it look quite like he conducted a purge as a cover to kill one investigation in particular. newrepublic.com/article/1913...

When no one enforces the law, does the law still exist? We in Alabama have experience with this, and it’s not good. My column: www.al.com/news/2025/02...

I know there is a lot of bad going on, but @reckless.bsky.social is right, what Brendan Carr is doing at the FCC is a five alarm fire. It's not subtle either.

Compare Bondi's memo, which characterizes DOJ attorneys as "the president's lawyers," with this memo that Ted Olson, who was then Reagan's OLC chief, sent to AG William French Smith in 1982. knightcolumbia.org/documents/jw...

Guys: The stuff going on at the National Archives is *nuts*. Much worse than is being reported. Full story here. (Unlocked for everyone today.) www.thebulwark.com/p/the-story-...

Yep. Probably a bad sign when the FBI Director nominee repeatedly takes the 5th

DOGE is fanning out across health agencies this week They’re seeking (and getting) access to sensitive payment systems in hunt for fraud and abuse They’re even getting boots on the ground at CDC in Atlanta with @jeffstein.bsky.social @lenasun.bsky.social @laurenkaorigurley.bsky.social

I do not know a single person in DC who has not been directly negatively impacted by the "sudden disassembly in flight" of the U.S. government. In most cases the impact is major and professional and pyschological as well as economical. You might shrug it off and say, "It's about time."

New via NYT — The CIA sent the White House an unclassified email listing all employees hired by the spy agency over the last two years to comply with an executive order to shrink the federal work force. One former agency officer called the reporting of names a “counterintelligence disaster.”

Day 5 of #resisitancehistory for Black History Month The US regiment that spent the most time in the trenches in WW1 was a segregated Black regiment, the Fighting 369th better known as the Harlem Hellfighters They also suffered the most losses of any American unit (con’t)

NEW from me: Why has Patrick Soon-Shiong touted RFK Jr repeatedly and run interference for him at his paper, the LA Times? Maybe because his biotech company has 3 applications pending at the FDA, whose parent agency Kennedy is about to be running. prospect.org/power/2025-0...

now...who could that help?

Trump has immunity, and Musk will police his own conflicts. This is the basis for a crime spree. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Jesus Christ.

Perhaps if he had not spent so much time playing video games so that he could be the #1 video game player he would know that the answer to this question is "All of them."

Trump: Imma do a Kristallnacht like you won't believe. NYT: Kristallnacht had helped a leader to come to power before. Will it work for the second time?

The NOAA CO2 data website has vanished. gml.noaa.gov/ccgg/trends/

SCOOP: Many of the pages that went missing on Friday from the CDC website on Friday have reappeared — in response to intense media coverage, backlash from the scientific community and concern for the public’s health. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/03/h...

Conservative budget wonks (Manhattan Instiutte, Tax Foundation) confirming that this is a consittutional crisis. Not liberal hysteria. Happening right now.

At the newsletter right now: The Trump administration has scrubbed information about HIPAA protections for reproductive rights from the Department of Health and Human Services website.

No biggie, just an ancient equivalent of a clay photograph that shows a man walking his dog 3,800 years ago in the city of Borsippa 🥹

Literally the only NYT column I’ve read in months, because @ruthbenghiat.bsky.social wrote it. “If one thinks like an autocrat, the foremost quality that would seem to disqualify her from service — a simple lack of experience — is an asset, not a liability.” www.nytimes.com/2025/01/30/o...

Superb column from @jeetheer.bsky.social, a postmortem on Cold War liberalism 2.0 and 21st-century American grand strategy more broadly.

Proof that we no longer have a Rhodes Scholar running this agency

Psychopath.

Is anti-sexual-harassment training still permissible for federal employers under Trump’s orders? At the very least I am sure they will trigger complaints to the snitch lines.

My god I wish I were like 10% dumber what the world must be like.

NEW: The icebreaker Aiviq has design problems and a history of failure. Yet, under pressure from Congress, the Coast Guard purchased the vessel for $125 million late last year. By @mckenziefunk.com propub.li/4gbKNWT

1. IT WAS NEVER ABOUT "WOKE" Trump just repealed an executive order that established basic non-discrimination requirements for federal contractors It has been in place for 60 years It survived Nixon, Reagan, Bush I, and Bush II And now it is gone

One of Donald Trump's biggest legacies is nuclear proliferation. In his first term, he accepted North Korea as a nuclear weapons state, even doing PR for Kim, and let Iran out of nuclear restrictions in exchange for nothing. Not surprising Iran is now increasing uranium enrichment. Unfortunately.

Good news close to home & I also need folks to understand that the 2026 election here is being laser targeted.

You’re a Nazi if you do and say Nazi shit. What you believe in your heart is unknowable and irrelevant.

Jesus Christ.

This is a fascinating thread! It's important to remember that human biology is actually mysterious and amazing & that so much of fascism is rooted in empty-souled terror of bodily freedom.
