It's not just fdr. One of the things the epa did not long after it was formed was document the nation's pollution via photography. That can seem frivolous, but generations of Americans have no idea why the EPA was necessary. This broke a million views when we published it in 2017

My first boss in LA was on the conservative side, but he talked about how environmental regulation is an unambiguous good because he remembered growing up in LA in the 70s, and how some days you couldn’t go outside because the air quality was borderline toxic.

One of the legacies of the LaGuardia era was the construction of multiple trash incinerators in residential neighborhoods, including mine. The smokestacks ran 24/7 until 1970: you couldn't walk around the neighborhood without being covered in a fine layer of soot.

I grew up in Pittsburgh, and did not live near the mills. But in the 50's, the air was so bad that you could not see across the street. Cars rusted from the inside. Snow had a black layer (think Oreo cookie). The rivers glowed green, red and various other colors due to the pollution.

Yup as a kid in LA, skies were grey and soggy, so much we has smog alerts where we could not play outside and when it eventually rained it was dangerous to be in first rain. Lots of allergies and breathing issues required puffers to be carried by some people and old folks on oxygen was normal.

They are subversives. I grew up hearing republicans calling antiwar protestors subversives. They were never, ever as subversive as these insane GOP freaks.
