I see someone else said Blades in the Dark and SAME It's my favorite game but I have so many systems to try and it's already hard enough lining up schedules for those :(

It's always been a struggle for me. Real life constantly getting in the way of the only thing that really matters.

Hm well at worst you have an easy, carb-dense snack while you flee for your life

Ha and they call me a fool for always carrying a +3 Bag of Breadcrumbs

Honestly good question. The stuff that comes to mind for me is really fantastical. Like... Monster of the week? Maybe?

Railroading one epic, grand, emotional moment sandwiched between absolute monty python improv

Is it their piercing steely gaze?

Awesome hearing Electric Bastionland mentioned in the wild. It's like a worldbuilding kit for weird fantasy meets steampunk meets the muppets.

Our go-to is usually Mork Borg (or Cyborg if you prefer cyberpunk) cuz it's absolutely insane and weird and funny Into the Odd is also pretty wacky and cool!

You: "I rolled a nat 1" Wife: "sigh.. I'll get the keys"

Gets them absolutely every time, you'd think they'd be ready. Nice to meet a fellow sadis- I MEAN suspense afficionado.

Hey I agree wholeheartedly! I think mechanics should reflect the story being told, and very often they have nothing to do with each other and it's worth mentioning

Or when they scream "OH SCREW YOU" The more they curse at and insult me, the better I know I did

Using your same analogy I BELIEVE they're saying "a hammer is not a wrench, and I'd rather use a wrench someone else made than figure out how to use my hammer as a wrench".

Players saying "OH SHIT NO WAY" >>>

Hey thanks friend, I'm glad you enjoyed

Is it the improv or the prep or what?? Is it something youre interested in being good at?

In the first scenario you're let down. In the second scenario you're letting someone else down.

Friend: "How are you liking the party?" You: "Fine. Good. Love it." Friend: "Roll Deception."

DnD led to long-lasting friendships with people I didn't know who are now some of my best friends, and gave me something to focus on when I was growing up and confused and needed escapism. Also great piece, Barbie looks badass

Hell yeah I'm ahead of the curve, I never prep ANYTHING

The rules are mega mega simple and open to interpretation most of the time! Bunch of OSR games have all their rules summarized on one page. Very new-DM friendly!
comment in response to post
We finished our campaign and I'm looking for an excuse to bring the setting back in another system
comment in response to post
If someone has awareness of them, OSR games are a GREAT place to start since theyre so extremely minimal in rules.

Oh wow even more exciting, congrats!

Conveniently make every single thing they pursue somehow lead back to the plot thread. #railroading

*rolls a couple times from Blades in the Dark's tables* This is Jeffrey Mortinnson. He's a dentist working in Charterhall with a lisp and a penchant for sweets and three beautiful children. He's saving money to send his eldest to school to become a botanist, and he owns an estate in Silkshore.

Idk about significant but Kobold Press is making a "cozy RPG" that looks cute

Weird NPCs characters will get unreasonably attached to, challenges that can't necessarily be solved by killing, at least one adventure-changing hard decision Bioware-style, and an egomaniacal villain who will be extra satisfying to defeat. Oh and a talking animal; players love talking animals.

Good luck! Break legs! Have fun!

I can't swing a sword or shoot lightning but I make fantastic quiche lorraine

When you meet them, You: "Roll initiative" Them: "Wh...what?" You: *pulls out broadsword* "Roll. Initiative."

That vibratey feeling you get while reading the rules and ALREADY planning plot twists and cool challenges before even knowing what characters or story you're about to have

I love what DnD 4e added to make this awesome, which was the 1 HP minions. Players love being able to just cut through swathes of them, and if there's enough of them they can still get the actions to put a little hurt on the players and make it feel semi-challenging
comment in response to post
I always offer the most fun alternative I can to "you missed, next turn" or "you fail, it doesn't work" BUT I always follow it up with "does that feel fair?" so I know players are cool with kinda bending the rules. I think outcomes in DnD can be a lot more conversational and metagamey and its ok.

Failing forward is my favorite way to handle it. It breaks the RAW, but it's fun. Sometimes instead of "you miss your attack" it's "you hit, but your sword is lodged in their armor and needs a bonus action to remove", or "you clear the jump, but you miss your footing and are hanging on the ledge"

The DM needs his own safety word

Oh that's drastically worse

No problem, friend! I have the same struggle just with getting all my friends to have work schedules that meet up for a game night. Discovered startplaying and started playing online during pandemic and Ive had tons and tons more games than I would have otherwise.
comment in response to post
Definitely hit up startplaying.games !! GREAT place to find people for all kinds of systems and settings! Your mileage may vary on quality/commitment of players applying, but that's the risk with all online games. As for virtual tabletop, Roll20 is fine but I personally use Foundry VTT.
