Even as a teenager I remember thinking "okay but the name sounds pretty fash" and it turns out the word "homeland" instead of something normal (like "domestic" or "national") really was a red flag.

Mass deportation and immigration enforcement in the interior requires a police state, and the more of that you want, the more obviously it will look and act like a police state. Roll paramilitary goons into people's neighborhoods and it isn't some abstract issue of "the border" anymore.
