No wonder then that they have little appreciation of what Europe could be, if they were not so obstructive. The mainstream political class, Schröder, Merkel, Scoltz, should take the blame. Will Merz be any different?

They also have little appreciation how they damaged the EU and eurozone by resisting banking and capital markets union, and importing demand from other countries (trade imbalances). They are sceptical about Europe’s prospects having been prime culprits in creating those poor prospects.

Germans have little understanding how they benefitted from being in the EU and eurozone. It reduced the costs of their exports and encouraged capital flight to them during the eurozone crisis.

Impossible to understate how important Germany is to the EU and eurozone success or dissolution. For it to flourish we need more integration. Germany key. Second best option is a breakup, but for this to happen it’s best Germany initiates the breakup. So other countries’ euro denominated debts fall.

First, the COM needs to set some genuine sectoral priorities. The Draghi report offers a solid framework for selecting industries (below). We get that officially writing off sectors is politically tricky—but providing a focused positive list with clear sector-specific goals should be doable!
