Why does it matter? Three-party coalitions are rare in Germany, and are perceived as unstable. In these times, an unstable government benefits the far-right, which thrives in uncertainty - maybe not for this election cycle, but for the next after years of more infighting and unclear policy.

How many small parties achieved the 5% threshold to gain seats in the Bundestag? Several smaller parties, the FDP, die Linke and the BSW were around the 5% mark minimum to gain a representative portion. The fewer parties which achieve that mark, the easier for Merz to form a two-party coalition.

It’s a good one! The caveats layered on caveats made it a bit of a slog at times (‘It might be that legend may have said that it could have happened’). On balance, I liked it.
Just to be clear, historical caveats are necessary and good.
