Microsoft created a new state of matter, but people think tech companies won’t be able to figure how to train and run AI models without consuming exponentially more electricity www.nytimes.com/2025/02/19/t...

The UK government wants to cut down on red tape and let builders build. Meanwhile the country’s only nuclear power plant under construction might be delayed again as EDF decides whether or not to build an underwater sound system for fish conservation www.theguardian.com/business/202...

Despite Trump's anti-wind executive orders, investment in new wind farms is set to surge in the coming years. As of now, it looks like Trump will beat his own record for new wind capacity added in a four-year term www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...

I have a new paper in Dialogues on Climate Change exploring climate outcomes under current policies. I find that we are likely headed toward 2.7C by 2100 (with uncertainties from 1.9C to 3.7C), and that high end emissions scenarios have become much less likely. journals.sagepub.com...

Has the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) weakened over the last decades? In our new study, we combine state-of-the-art CMIP6 models and observation-based estimates of the air-sea heat flux in the North Atlantic to show that the AMOC has not declined since the 1960s! 🌊

In an interview with Bloomberg published last week, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said he thinks the best way to prevent AI from hindering the fight against climate change is with fusion power, a technology he says won’t be ready for an unspecified number of years 🤔 www.bloomberg.com/features/202...

“No cartel controls the sun. Its energy will not run out. It will not pollute the air; it will not poison our waters. It's free from stench and smog. The sun's power needs only to be collected, stored, and used.” -Jimmy Carter during a May 1978 visit to the Solar Energy Research Institute

On the day when scientists confirm that global warming exceeded 1.5C on an annual basis for the first time in 2024, some other headlines that jump out: Indonesia’s coal production hits a record China’s coal production is set to rise for a ninth straight year www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Genuine question, if Chinese EVs are so much better than American and European ones, why does Tesla sell so many cars in China?

"It felt more like a supercomputer on wheels than any car you can buy in the United States right now." Chinese EV makers show off their advanced cars at CES in Vegas, making auto & tech fans drool and US automakers very nervous. insideevs.com/news/746628/... 🔌💡 🔌🚗

Solar power profits. Rising demand for new (cheaper) EVs. A long-awaited recovery for the wind industry. These are some of the reasons to be optimistic about the energy transition heading into 2025, by @davidfickling.bsky.social www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...

Once hyped as the next big thing in clean energy, the hydrogen bubble completely collapsed this year. Dozens of projects were cancelled. Jobs eliminated. Expectations lowered. It all comes down to cost. It’s too expensive today and it’s going to stay expensive www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

All that rapid and growing clean-energy build is not enough to start the secular decline of coal. The extreme rise in gas prices post-pandemic has reinforced coal's energy-security benefits for India and China. www.bloomberg.com/news/article... by @willmathis.bsky.social

The CEOs of two of France’s biggest energy companies, Total and EDF, agreed that a law meant to accelerate the deployment of renewables in France has actually made the process more time-consuming. “Red tape is the first brake to decarbonization.” #energysky www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

The results from BloombergNEF's 2024 lithium-ion battery price survey are out. Lithium-ion battery pack prices dropped 20% from 2023 to a record low of $115 per kilowatt-hour. This is the largest decline observed in our survey since 2017. 🧵⬇️

Europe is finding a limit to its wind power expansion. Take Denmark. It gets more of its electricity from wind than any other country. But no one wants to build anymore because prices are too low when it’s windy. The solution? More flexible demand to match www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Stellantis and CATL will build a €4.1 billion battery factory in Spain. Not only is Spain one of the biggest car producers in Europe, but it also has some of the cheapest and increasingly renewable power sources in the EU www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

This isn’t actually a new record. According to data from the UK’s grid operator, wind and solar alone, even without hydro, already provided more electricity than fossil fuels in Britain last year. That’s set to happen again in 2024 and probably every year for the foreseeable future

Another example of AI driving more investment in fossil fuels on the power grid

BP’s stock went up 5% today, the most since February, after it announced it’s slashing spending on offshore wind and spinning the business out into a JV. Investors never rewarded them for going into renewables and now seem to be cheering their retreat #energysky www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

China’s solar panel makers just formed the OPEC of renewable energy. The biggest manufacturers of solar equipment have essentially formed a cartel and have agreed to production quotas next year in response to soaring supplies that have destroyed profits www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

To put this in context, the entire R&D budget for wind power at the Department of Energy is $132 million.

Last night wind generation in the UK reached 21.914 GW, just shy of a record 21.998 GW. At that time wind was satisfying about two thirds of demand, pushing gas to below 10%. It’s impressive, but shows how challenging the UK goal to push gas below 5% for a whole year is.

China is set to add a record 260 gigawatts of solar this year. For perspective, that’s more than the total added globally in 2022, which was a record year. It’s nearly 6x more than the US, the second-biggest market, is set to add this year www.bloomberg.com/news/article... #energysky

Stunning decline of fossil fuel production in the UK. Oil and gas production are down nearly 75% since the late 1990s and are only set to fall further. This is why UK government says ditching fossil fuels is key to energy security. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

This £3 billion wind farm in Scotland has been paid twice as often to NOT generate electricity as to actually generate electricity. The developer SSE plans to build an even bigger project in Scotland, despite the grid bottlenecks
