Had a great ‘Nerd Night’! We shared our science and scripts for contacting our reps!

My mom at the DC event, standing up for science! #standupforscience

🧪Update on NIH IDC court case! Preliminary injunction!

If you live anywhere near Washington DC please join us for #StandUpForScience on Friday at the Mall. Let’s make our voices heard!! 🧪

As state employees in a red state we can’t do a ‘walk out’ but we can do a ‘night out’. We’ll be headed downtown March 7 with ‘Ask me anything, I’m a scientist’ shirts. Hopefully we’ll get some good questions and more people contacting their reps. #standupforscience

Today is Rare Disease Day, and a great reminder of the importance of NIH and science funding in driving hope 🧬⬇️ www.rarediseaseday.org

What do you get when #NationalProteinDay and #NationalPokémonDay meet? Pikachurin. ⚡ A 2023 #ScienceSignaling study solved the structure of this extracellular protein that plays an essential role in vision. Learn more: scim.ag/4gZdRRI

Do you want water that’s safe for your family to drink, air that’s safe for your family to breathe, or a livable climate? We’re apparently cutting 2/3 of our capacity, so pick one of those three. 🤷 www.nytimes.com/2025/02/26/c...

As federal research grants continue to be frozen, and NIH staff is being gutted, please note this study was funded by federal research grants, including from NIH. If they continue with staff cuts, and continue to freeze new awards, this is just one example of what we lose.

"...instead of providing feedback on critical biomedical research for federal funding, I'm here to explain what America is losing when we lose basic science research," said Rutgers professor @annikabarber.bsky.social @ruaaup-aft.bsky.social

Anyone in South Florida interested?

If you're looking for a neuroscience postdoc position, please consider applying - fantastic city, very welcoming community, and a PI who is both highly knowledgeable and very fun to work with as a person. Strongly recommended!

98% of NIH grants that should have gone out this month, didn't. Despite court orders 'unfreezing' the funds, they are frozen. Biomedical research will grind to a halt. Clinical trials will end. All for no reason: the total impact on the US budget is miniscule

Very good source to understand indirect costs by Sally Rockey, former Deputy Director for Extramural Activities at NIH. Very thorough and clear. If you want to understand indirect costs or have family or friends who are pestering you to explain IDC, send them this... www.aau.edu/key-issues/i...

@NIH’s new 15% cap on research funds threatens U.S. science. Call Congress now to oppose it! Your voice matters—act today. Find your rep’s number at govtrack.us. #SupportScience #cellbiology

Made some slides for scientists to talk about what's been happening & what we should do next. There are probably many people better qualified than me to talk about these issues. If that's you, please, please, please consider holding some virtual advocacy training sessions for researchers this week.

March for science? AAUP & other unions are working on action plans and messaging around NIH, DEI, and other slashes Feb 13: National call in 8PM (below) Feb 19: National day of action on campuses (details soon) Feb 25: National Action & Press Conference in DC (details soon) @aaup.bsky.social

Your Action Is Needed! Congress needs to hear from scientists. Call your representatives to oppose funding freezes and restrictions on research. Find contact info at govtrack.us and make your voice heard today! #SciencePolicy www.ascb.org/science-poli...

I just reached out to my senators about the NIH situation. If you need to find out how much impact NIH has in your state in terms of dollars in and their economic impact here's a link: www.unitedformedicalresearch.org/nih-in-your-...

If you’ve been directly impacted by a pause or cancellation of an NIH study session, we @forbes.com would like to talk to you

🧪 Lab's latest!! Work by PD (and now PI) Alison Philbrook. C. elegans sensory neurons have gorgeous #cilia. We’ve always thought that a) no cilia = no sensory responses, & b) no IFT = no cilia. Punchline is we thought wrong. Read paper for more! #neuroscience journals.plos.org/plosbiology/...
