Our lives are being taken over by requests to complete automated questionnaires or assessments, each driven by a "reasonable" need to lessen risk. Are we still collectively in control of these systems, or are they in charge of us? My latest column @bmj.com, just out. www.bmj.com/content/388/...

I think about this a lot, especially as I’m teaching college students, these days. Sometimes the point of being alive is the people we are alive for. Sometimes we have to be each other’s reason and trust that doing so will lead us to other reasons.

The more I live the more I’m astounded by how difficult it is to keep living and to remain a person. This is WORK.

People assume Andrew Cuomo is tough and A Fighter because he always looks angry and acts weird. Mistaking a total lack of emotional self-regulation and wild, self-destructive spite for Masculine Strength is one of the defining political errors to me. No one even tries to keep it together anymore.

Word of the day is ‘huff-snuff’ (16th century): a hectoring bully or braggart.

Why you could catch #norovirus more than once this season Damien Tully explains how shift in strains in UK means people who have had norovirus could still be at risk & gives tips on how to protect yourself: use soap over sanitisers! www.lshtm.ac.uk/newsevents/n...

A cost-of-living crisis isn't the easiest time to sell art, but: www.ciaraioch.com is where you can support my work, with each archival-quality print on textured heavy paper being produced here in Ireland, shipping internationally in eco-friendly packaging, with free mini-treats in every order 🎁

We cannot allow the deaths of children from vaccine preventable illnesses to be normalized in the U.S. in the same way that deaths of children from gun violence have been normalized. Children DO NOT need to die from preventable causes. We owe them full and healthy lives!

As the #measles outbreak continues, and has now unfortunately resulted in the death of a child, I see a lot of posts along the lines of: "I had measles as a child and I'm fine". Let me tell you a different version of that story: 🧵1/11 🧪 #medsky

Democracy never got off the ground at all for Indigenous and Black folks, and has never fully operated for immigrant communities, the disabled, or queer folks

This made me think of masking as well.

This 3yr anniversary that won't be in the news! When the UK government rolled out the "Living with Covid" policy it simply scrapped protections and shifted to personal responsibility. For most, it meant "back to normal." For Clinically Vulnerable people, life became harder. 1/🧵

‘Working class’ does not stand in for white working class men. There are women, queers, transfolks and non-white communities in the category of working class. It’s a tendentious overreach to make the analytic signify white men.

Interesting thread. Contact post discharge including post surgery would be useful for answering questions about the admission. I think it's helpful to the patient. Readmission is not the only important measure. Saying 'Contact your GP' generates a lot of work for GPs and general dissatisfaction.

Our society has a real problem with venerating business skills above all others. Just need to look at the US (and Man United). Being good at business doesn’t make you qualified to opine on anything other than your own business. And even then, luck is a huge factor (as well as family wealth usually)

Man that sweet spot between properly caffeinated and literally vibrating with impending catastrophe seems like it gets a little smaller every day

When the people with all the power are the ones yelling loudest about freedom of speech it’s usually because they’re trying to drown out everyone else’s.

We could just be reading great books, watching good movies, and eating fruit. Instead we have to survive/fight miserable power hoarders. What a waste of limited time.

It’s been a journey toward understanding this and I’m happy to share. White supremacy’s only goal is total annihilation. When we try to make ourselves “small” to be fit in and not be a bother or whatever, we’re actually doing white supremacy’s job.

I found this really moving, and pretty upsetting. For those who are seeking to make life harder for international medical graduates, THIS is what you are doing. For Dr Costache, you belong. You are one of us. You always were. scratchesofakitten.wordpress.com/2025/02/08/r...

Weak men cannot compromise. Weak men cannot build consensus. Weak men think that leadership means force. Weak men build nothing that lasts.

Why did you go into medicine? Why does that question still matter? A long-read on my blog here #MedSky #TeamGP drclairedavies.co.uk/why-medicine/

When changing how healthcare is delivered, such as the introduction of physician associates, it is for those making the change to supply the evidence of benefits in areas such as safety, quality and efficiency; and not for the critics to provide evidence of the negative impacts.

Jasmine Crockett: "The problem is that Americans thought it was okay to take a full fledged criminal and make him the President of the US and then they want to act aghast when he does criminal things. Let me tell you, we have a thug in charge of the US and if we don't wake up we may not have a US"

Incredibly moving Justin Trudeau remarks: "We have fought and died alongside you....During your darkest hours...we were always there. Standing with you, grieving with you, the American people....Canadians are a little perplexed as to why our closest friends and neighbors are choosing to target us."

I'm not sure how you can finish something when you don't know what it is you were doing. Ah, we are at MABA and I think we know where this is going.

To think that people voted for that grubby combination of hate, malevolence, ignorance and incompetence. The leopards are feasting. 'Nobody's free until everybody's free.' Fannie Lou Hamer.

He did so back in 2011, along with nine other councillors, over concerns it was too expensive to pump the mineral into the drinking sources of Calgary, Alberta. Since then, the 1.4 million people who live there have been without fluoridated water, and it appears to have come at a cost.

i think it is important to say that the open and explicit racism of the president and the vice president isn’t just uncouth or “controversial” but a direct attack on tens of millions of americans and a dereliction of their duty to represent the entire country

Resist.
