Some of the signs from today's art build for International Day Against Police Brutality! Come out next Saturday at 3pm for IDAPB, starting at WPS HQ and ending at X-Cues.

Several months? Smyth retired in September 2024 and the new chief was supposed to be appointed by the end of the year, with no explanation from the police board for the delay.

Turns out that Gene Bowers is the new WPS chief after all. Safe to assume the public will receive no explanation of why there were months of delays and legalities. Here's our recent rundown of his bizarre obsession with sex workers. Total scumbag. winnipegpolicecauseharm.org/blog/the-ant...

This is tomorrow! Drop by if you're able to, spread the word even if you're not!

Anyway, I am absolutely breaking my personal rule about being bitchy about political action on the tl, so I would like to instead direct your attention to this art build and subsequent International Day Against Police Brutality. Police enforce unjust laws unjustly bsky.app/profile/wpgp...

Mad at the general state of the world? Come make art about it!

Important thread about the police's constant conflation of sex work with trafficking

Regular reminder that "Sheepdog Brew" is owned by an active WPS officer and its name is very likely referencing the Thin Blue Line-style copaganda of "sheepdogs who protect the flock, attack the wolves, and apparently always know the differences between the three groups" www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

arguing about the 'actual' source of fent w/o qualifying that it's not the source of the toxic drug crisis is what the drug war class wants by evoking it — a distraction from the drug war policies and resource allocation that actually drives all the death and violence bsky.app/profile/tsk....

For the love of tenants, join us on February 12th to help stop rent hikes! The Right to Housing coalition is launching a campaign urging the province to keep rents affordable. Plus, a new report on rent hikes in West Broadway will be released! #mbpoli

From a Reddit thread generating a list of "the MAGA local business' and influencers in Winnipeg" to name + shame. This is who Gillingham and EPC just hand another $15 million/year to, along with a new helicopter and armoured vehicle. www.reddit.com/r/Winnipeg/c...

the toxic drug crisis is not about fentanyl — it is about an unpredictable, unregulated and shifting drug supply under prohibitionist frameworks — and obviously this trade conflict is not about fentanyl either

Wab Kinew and many other Canadian politicians tried to satisfy a fascist's whims by ramping up racist border policing/militarization. It of course didn't do anything, and now asylum seekers pay the price of their cynical political opportunism.

Canada published its last analysis of this in 2021, based on people federally incarcerated from 1999–2001 (who hadn't since died, been re-incarcerated, etc). It found a ~50% unemployment rate. Of those who were working, average income was $14k CAD ($10k USD). www.publicsafety.gc.ca/cnt/rsrcs/pb...

Winnipeg is not a city but a Police Department that can ask for whatever it wants, while the citizenry has limited transit, dangerous pedestrian infrastructure, and unfunded services across the board.

Our city council is a joke, and not a funny one.

Morgan Modjeski is a prairie journalist with incredible integrity who is being relentlessly, personally targeted by the Winnipeg Police for his ethical work with community sources. This is a crucial challenge to be aware of regarding journalistic freedom in Canada. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Truly incredible quote from the fool who is supposedly tasked with chairing police oversight in Winnipeg: "I didn't look up the cost of the H125 Airbus helicopter before today — just realizing it now. In terms of that cost, there's more questions to be asked." www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

We could transform the chopper into 21.5 years of funding for Community Connections at Millennium Library

The most common call type the helicopter responds to is wellness check.

Policing-based responses to community safety concerns are both more expensive and less effective than approaches that centre meeting people’s needs. When cities take money away from needs-meeting to spend on police, the net effect is making us significantly less safe.

Needs to be reiterated over and over that Gillingham, Browaty, and the rest of EPC's refusal to fund services like Community Connections while hugely increasing police funding is making the city even LESS safe, especially for the most marginalized. They're actively WORSENING safety - at huge cost.

Duncan and Browaty have been consistent, and Browaty loudly so over recent weeks, that their aim is to stop serving the people served by Connections. They aim to exclude. It is not an accident, nor misunderstanding.

The US is not a "safe country" for refugees. Canada needs to stop pretending otherwise. I wrote about how, as Donald Trump ramps up his war on migrants, Canada has a legal and moral responsibility to withdraw from the Safe Third Country Agreement. For @policyalternatives.bsky.social

Gillingham and his posse of losers hate poor/Indigenous people and want them to suffer and die. Cutting Community Connections to save $650k while increasing police funding by more than $15 million is racist, anti-poor, settler-colonial violence against the most marginalized Winnipeggers. Monsters.

An absolutely horrifying result of criminalization and the cowardly refusal by governments to accelerate the rollout of safe consumption sites, let alone a legal and regulated safe supply of drugs www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

The WPS has a bigger budget than ever - and is about to get tens of millions more every year - yet it's so clear that policing is not working as claimed. Actually addressing these issues requires providing people's basic needs. www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews...

A week ago, several WPCH members and community supporters presented to the Winnipeg Police Board's special budget meeting. We've uploaded the videos to our YouTube if you'd like to check them out. They're linked below in order of presentation.
