Happy “everyone post the full disk image because the terminator is a vertical line” day to those who celebrate!

This has been a fun thread worthy of more than just being buried in a reply chain

Sharing some new work I am pretty proud of! Highlights communication issues around the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale when the primary threat is not wind. Let me know if you need the PDF. journals.ametsoc.org/view/journal...

for all of the people leaving Twitter: can I please beg you to do one of those five ish dollar services to transfer your tweets here? (Or at the very very least, GDPR/export your data first?) Lots of information being lost… I had bookmarked this thread and now it’s gone.

New ESSL study: Lightning kills about 64 people per year across Europe, 78% of them being men. In eastern Europe most victims were at work, whilst in West Europe people engaging in leisure activities are hit more often. Read more in our article here: journals.ametsoc.org/view/journal...

that… that’s not good…

alright this was a grand old time but can someone explain to me why it was necessary for me to receive FOURTEEN total emails relating to this incident? “It’s just one little explosion, come on”

can’t decide if this’ll get me in twitter trouble or if it’s even worth acknowledging or even continuing to use that app.

The EverythingWeather app is now available on both Apple (iOS) and Android devices! Android: play.google.com/store/apps/d... iOS: apps.apple.com/us/app/every...

Now that I’ve had this explained to me this is my favorite snarky response to BS

Volcanic Ash Advisory Centers are really important because they let aircraft know where volcanic ash plumes are.

I hope Twitter stays down for good this time.

INCREDIBLE live eruption of Guatemala's Volcan de Fuego. Fuego, which normally erupts every ~30 mins, was silent for weeks, but has roared back to life with continuous eruptive activity generating massive lava fountains, lava avalanches, and pyroclastic flows. LIVE: www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpqT...

This. Also, won’t someone think of the programmers??? There would have to be yet another exception made in every single date library ever. If we were to change time, I propose “nanoseconds since 1/1/1970” that just constantly increases. Planning an event? I’ll meet you at 1741618800000000000

What a roller coaster. I am grateful for and in awe of our wide NSF community. Reinstatement of fired staff is the right outcome of the first fight. www.axios.com/2025/03/03/n...

Who needs radars or weather models to operate, anyway

No guarantees of open positions or of when, but if you were just laid off from NOAA/NWS, reaching out may be worth a shot. ECCC appears to be opening their meteorologist slots more widely than ever before. Gotta be willing to move to Canada and if you speak any French you will have advantages :)

sidelobe contamination on KFWS tonight

Solar, wind, and nuclear currently producing 41 GW in ERCOT's fuel mix. Coal and nat gas producing 6.3 GW. Gee, I wonder which is cheaper!

In addition to all the firings, the NWS has lost their ability to spend money. No parts to fix radars, office supplies, etc. Three weather radars have gone down since last week. Unclear if or when they will be able to be repaired.
