"The instrument of wise [government] oversight is the scalpel, not the chainsaw." www.realclimate.org/index.php/ar... "The National Weather Service (NWS) and its parent agency NOAA, delivers remarkable value to the taxpayers. This efficiency can be demonstrated by its enormous return on investment."

There's the Day 2 wind driven Moderate Risk, with a 45% hatched wind probability. A large 10% hatched tornado probability surrounds it

Nice piece by three heavyweights on the academia side of meteorology explaining NOAA’s critical importance.

Truth👇🏼

Some comments had the opportunity to make earlier today… www.kens5.com/article/weat...

Scoop: ~33% of NWS offices no longer have sufficient staffing to safely keep 24/7 operations. Critically understaffed @nws.noaa.gov offices now include: Boston Miami Houston Omaha Wichita Kansas City Marquette, MI Sioux Falls, SD Rapid City, SD Cheyenne, WY www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

NOAA set to cut more than 1,000 additional employees. @bloomberg.com Bloomberg Government's Kellie Lunney has the story here: news.bgov.com/bloomberg-go... #cliamte #weather #government #doge

I don’t think a lot of people outside science understand the symbiotic relationship we have between public, private, and educational sectors. We all lean on each other for help, support, and R&D. In most cases, we aren’t competing so much as all rowing different boats in the same direction.

"The anonymous source told OU Daily they believe the minimum staffing level required for tornado events may not be met after these layoffs. The National Weather Service issues tornado warnings and watches." www.oudaily.com/news/nationa...

A 2024 NBER study, “The Social Value of Hurricane Forecasts,” found recent advancements in hurricane forecasting led to a 19% reduction in hurricane-related costs--an average cost reduction of $5 billion per hurricane. It's import to keep funding research! yaleclimateconnections.org/2025/02/the-...

Reminder! A little more than 2 weeks away from the Tri-State Tornado 100th anniversary event in southern Illinois. You can still register on NWS PAH's web page: www.weather.gov/pah/Tri-Stat...

Your weather app gets its info because of NOAA. Your mail arrives at your home because of USPS. Your plane navigates the skies because of the FAA. Your food is safer -- and we get alerts when it isn't -- because of USDA. You hear about earthquakes *worldwide* because of USGS.

Proposed and ongoing cuts at FEMA and the National Weather Service could endanger public safety when disaster strikes. A critically important analysis from @drjeffmasters.bsky.social and @bhensonweather.bsky.social yaleclimateconnections.org/2025/02/cuts...

Please share: The Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, Democratic Staff, is surveying the impact of the Trump Admin’s mass firings of federal employees from science agencies. If you were terminated since 20 Jan 2025 please fill out this survey: democrats-science.house.gov/sciencefirings

Finally got around to making a radar graphic for #Helene. One for the record books

Struggle is a word choice…no private entity could come close to what NOAA/NWS does.

The PDF that detailed NOAA’s Radar Next Program was deleted by Executive Order www.noaa.gov/sites/defaul...

NOAA is reportedly on the DOGE chopping block. The National Weather Service, which is part of NOAA, provides life saving weather forecasting in the US. A study found that for every $1 invested in NWS, it produces $73 in value to Americans. Again, this isn't about efficiency.

BTW, if you work in the weather/climate/disaster/emergency management space and are/were a federal employee who has been fired in recent hours/days, there are multiple journalists interested in speaking to you (and will be watching replies on this thread).

I am beyond words at what is happening to recent hires across the federal government, specifically within NOAA. Firing everyone who started working within the past year means anyone from new college graduates getting their first job to seasoned professionals changing positions. [1/2]

ATTN FEDERAL WORKERS: I’ll say this again: download all your SF-50s, performance evals, and your eOPF. Now. Print hard copies. And make sure you file an informal grievance with your supervisor within 15 days of any adverse action. Here is a template: www.muellershewrote.com/p/informal-g...

I suppose this is a good opportunity to educate on what the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research *does*. In addition to managing NCAR, a US-based clearinghouse for atmospheric science, UCAR is a convergence point for all atmospheric science education programs. www.ucar.edu/what-we-do

Includes quote from Precipitation Sage Greg Carbin: “Cutting these services now would be a reckless decision that would cost far more in lives and damages than it would ever save on a balance sheet – it is an essential safeguard for the nation’s security, economy and wellbeing.”

Let’s start with social science in NOAA/NWS. Those advisories, watches, and warnings? That’s ‘product language’ representing escalating risk. We investigate how people make sense of this language so that it can be improved to communicate the impacts and the actions you can take to be safe. 1/

“The Musk approach is, ‘Hey, I'll break it and if somebody says afterwards you shouldn't have broken that, I'll say, oops,’” Rosenberg said. “Once they destroy the agencies, they're not going to be able to put them back together again, no matter what a judge says.”

NEW: @noaa.gov offices have been asked to search their grants for climate-related keywords, among other executive order-related terms. This could put climate grant-funding in the crosshairs if/once the judicial order holding the funding freeze back is lifted. www.axios.com/2025/02/09/n...

I work for The Weather Company, which has a much used cellphone app for the weather, provides aviation weather services, and much more. We stand on the backs of giants, relying on information from the National Weather Service for what we do. Harming the NWS will harm us and many other businesses.

What is NOAA? What does NOAA do? The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)'s contributions go far beyond daily weather forecasts and storm updates. From essential information gathering to cutting-edge research, NOAA is at the heart of it all.

New — Sources tell me OPM is preparing mass firing of probationary employees after agencies submitted lists of them last week without context. If supervisors want to keep someone on, they need to write a short justification. Directive was high level. They were told not to put any of this in print.

🧵: The State of Oklahoma is going after kids with learning disabilities. State Bill 1017 has been introduced to narrow what is able to be included in an IEP and to redefine therapies which help kids succeed as medical, effectively removing these services from schools and IEPs.

For those who study climate, get ready, you are next. Backup everything you have.

13 record highs for every record low. The climate of the 20th century is gone.

Its pretty stark just how much warmer 2023 and 2024 were globally than any prior year on record. For more details, see our Berkeley Earth global temperature report here: berkeleyearth.org/gl...
