I saw an owl on campus about 30 mins ago. Our mascot is the owl so it felt like a sign. Not sure what it is a sign of, but it feels positive. Go Owls!

NEW: Pregnancy became far more dangerous in Texas after the state banned abortion, according to ProPublica’s first-of-its-kind analysis, which found the sepsis rate for women hospitalized as they miscarried in the 2nd trimester shot up by more than 50%. https://propub.li/43487Tj

Update! It went really well. We watched a video about Elizabethan fashion, talked about sumptuary laws, and did some blackwork. I'll definitely add this to my repertoire going forward

When you're a bit extra and make professional-looking blackwork kits for your in-class Elizabethan fashion activity, and stitch a model with varying thicknesses. I hope my students appreciate me! 😂

I promised my students that I would teach them about Tudor fashion on Tuesday... so I need to learn about Tudor fashion (any suggestions?) 😂😭 As part of that, I'm teaching them how to do blackwork embroidery, which I do know how to do. So that's my weekend plans sorted

#crossstitch people, we've built a community of over 50 REAL designers. We put our heart and soul into our designs. Like the feed to stay in the loop and follow our journey: https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:kb2wjk7eeazo5a5wpe7dgyyk/feed/aaaolupuugqv2

Happy International Day of Women in Science. The National Science Foundation’s list of flagged words includes both “Women” and “Female.”

If you'd like to donate to us to help keep things going here, we have a Ko-Fi account for one-off and subscription donations 🫡 We don't receive any external funding and we're currently only at 2% of our baseline running costs goal for the year, so every little bit helps! ko-fi.com/workingclass...

Kristi Noem. It makes me so sad.

I must not be wording this right. Lemme try again. There is only one (1) office (not even an institute) at the NIH dedicated to women’s health research. That office is now being dismantled, with only a bland landing page remaining on their website. This is a five-alarm fire! orwh.od.nih.gov

WELCOME TO BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Apropros of nothing, I’m reupping my @theemancipator.org article arguing that the so-called “anti-DEI movement” is a segregationist movement, and journalists should state this clearly. There is no need to help evil by adopting their language. theemancipator.org/2025/01/28/t...

Stop fucking saying he blamed “DEI,” which is some abstract, non-tangible idea. He is blaming people of color having jobs he thinks they aren’t qualified for. He’s blaming race. He’s being racist every time he says it. Journalists need to get fucking backbones, my word.

I am so excited! I just found out that I will receive the The M. C. Lang Fellowship from the Rare Book School at the University of Virginia. This will open up so many opportunities for me and my students and I'm seriously giddy!

remember, the blitzkrieg is intended to make you feel like there is nothing you can do about it; that’s the only reason to go forward in this haphazard and sloppy manner all in the first week and the choice of that strategy tells you they are afraid you *will* do something about it

“In the eighteenth century, people believed cheese could cure leprosy.” I suspect I’m not going to change a lot of minds on this one, but one thing I’ve thought about a lot is how we discuss historical ‘beliefs’ like this more carefully. (1/n)

Looks fake doesn't it? This reconstruction of Medieval Bologna shows how Italian towns used to be a forest of towers, dense as Manhattan skyscrapers! Here's a stable blog-formatted version of my thread from yesterday about the lost towers of the Guelph-Ghibelline wars www.exurbe.com/the-lost-tow...

DRUM ROLL 🥁🥁🥁 I’m thrilled to reveal that, as of Monday, Mississippi will have a full-time Indigenous reporter based in Neshoba County covering the tribe, MFP East Central bureau and traveling state (and nation). Welcome, @neshobadude83.bsky.social! www.mississippifreepress.org/listings/ite...

If youre wondering why so many fake AI profiles on social media are traditionally marginalized people its because the goal is an illusion of diversity that funnels money away from actual minority creators and into the hands of cis white male tech bros.
