Recent proposals to restrict #asylum claims incl discriminatory measures to prevent those with Pakistani, Nigerian + Sri Lankan nationalities from acquiring intl #StudentVisas, based on the Gov’s demonising assessment that these nationalities are more likely to ‘abuse’ the system by claiming asylum.

Whether or not you voted Labour, this column from Byline Times is relevant.

Mainstream radio presenters like Vanessa Feltz are perfectly happy to contribute, in their own small way, to the rise of the extreme far right. Her interview with me on LBC just now was chock full of lies. Calls herself a journalist. Really I wonder how they sleep at night.

3 elections in as many weeks. Centre left parties in two of them take on populist right and win, in 3rd they emulate populists and lose. Could there be a lesson here? And is there even a remote chance U.K. Labour might see it?

For hundreds of years, women in the South Korean island province of Jeju have made their living harvesting seafood by hand from the ocean floor. See Hyung S. Kim’s portraits of the sea women.

You’re telling me that right wing voters that Labour was trying to appeal to voted for a right wing party anyway and left wing voters decided not to vote for Labour because they’re too right wing now? Who could have possibly predicted this.

Today I joined Right to Roam and 400 people today in a mass swim trespass at Kinder Reservoir in the Peak District. The event was in commemoration of the anniversary of the Kinder Scout Mass Trespass, but with a very modern & pressing issue of access.

Minorities were frightened under the Tories. They're now terrified under Labour.

I feel increasingly disconnected from the party I voted for and had such high hopes for. Did we give them a mandate to cos-play Reform-lite? I want them to lead and argue for their vision instead of chasing polls. Oh and charge me more income tax instead of penalising kids & disabled people

UK charities warn of record high child poverty if two-child benefit cap not scrapped. £3.6bn would lift 350,000 children out of poverty, reduce poverty for another 700,000. Govts that bail out & subsidise corporations can eradicate poverty. Ditch the Tory policy. Tax the rich. Save the future.

A Labour government is doing this. What utter bastards.

As I watch Starmer tear up Labour's prospects by attacking people in poverty, abusing those who care about the living world and appeasing the ultra-rich, I feel the same sense of dislocation as I did before the Iraq War. Anyone can see the disaster coming, except, apparently, the government.

Thread. A few thoughts on World Parkinson's Day. Firstly we are all on a different journey. We have different symptoms, present differently and decline at different rates.

John Scheve Arctic News "Warming could spiral completely out of control any time now because of the less than 1 million square km of sea ice cover in each of the polar regions, vastly increasing methane emissions, and the exponential cascade of other feedbacks.

We've focussed on the big names , Shell , Exxon , BP , but these companies are run by people . People who hide behind those brands to keep their anonymity These corporations , and their leaders , are committing ecocide & they must be held accountable Ban Fossil Fuel Ads → govpetition.uk/700024

Disability benefit cuts will push over 250,000 people, including 50,000 children, into poverty. So I asked the Chancellor — who earns over £150,000, accepted £7,500 in free clothes & took freebie tickets to see Sabrina Carpenter — if Austerity 2.0 is the "change" people voted for?

Reeves will argue the UK has to "move quickly in a changing world"… by cutting benefits rather than taxing the wealthy or stopping Brexit from stifling prosperity. Making the vulnerable pay for grim govt choices. More austerity to fund ‘sovereignty’. What an ugly farce. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Cry for me Britannia. Over 85,000 children in Britain living in extreme poverty. Nursery-aged child hospitalised malnourished, caused heart condition, teeth removed. Govts prioritise arbitrary fiscal rules, won't tax the rich, redistribute. 1% has more wealth than 70% of the population combined.

After months of very little Covid activity, a new variant has popped up in South Africa that looks to have been evolving quietly for years in someone with a chronic infection. Still very early days, so could easily fizzle out, but still something to keep an eye on.
