It's the beltline that does it. An Impreza wagon and a BMW X1 from 2015ish are near an inch or two in every dimension. The beltline height makes one look like an a car, and the other like an SUV.

Oh man, I remember there being a promo video for this on my family's first computer, a Compaq Presario 4402. Wish I could find that video, there's a TV ad on YT but that isn't it.
