🧵 This is a perfect example of how disordered discourse reshapes democratic politics, not by policy failure, but by the performative targeting of identity. Let’s unpack what’s happening.

She was also arrested at a pro-Palestinian rally for illegally carry a firearm.
However being associated with that group could lead you to trouble too, like the Chicago 7 for example.
From prejudice to performative disordered discourse.
Up or down doesn't matter to them. As long as it's violent swings earning fees on all the transactions.
Lutnick, I'm talking about Lutnick here.
SHE GOT OFF BECAUSE NYPD DECIDED SHE WASN'T A THREAT. IN ANY NORMAL WORLD SHE WOULD BE IN THE DUSTBIN OF HISTORY AND RIDICULED AS A NUTCASE.
I think Councilwoman Inna Vernikov can't handle an expression of young passion.
I think Niesewand is going to be able to look at photos of their style adventure in 50 years and think "Wow, nice!"
Also, Vernikov missed the asymmetric sleeves

Here's how 1930's Germany was described that matches so much of today:
But can you clarify what you mean by "the political class"? That's a pretty amorphous concept -- who, exactly, are they, by your measure?
In your home? At work? Running your government? In your classroom? The ruin of the reason to join together…
Gladwell’s latest, “Revenge of the tipping point” focuses on this group impact and he actually answers how many (but only if we want to use this number).

I don't give a fuck if one of them was nice. It's stupid to venerate them as a group.
Old? Thomas Jefferson was 33 when he wrote the Declaration of Independence.
Would hate this student if they were alive today? I very much doubt it.
The salutatorian of my graduating class in my small, conservative high school in the buckle of the Bible Belt was a chick with a crew cut & combat boots who gave a speech regarding McCarthyism. I graduated high school in 1984. We've been here forever. Get over yourself!

Then stop.
"It reflects their values."
It doesn't. It reflects your (general "your") judgments and prejudices, which are subjective.
First impressions are cruel.
Shall we judge her presentation, the (lack of) values it appears to present, and her poor judgment as to social norms?
See the problem now?
👍🏻 having an internal reaction to someone’s presentation and even maybe making personal choices about socializing or business
👎🏻 using your position as an elected official to single out and publicly mock someone.
I’m an old lady who supported progressive politics, who sat in for “peace and love”. What I see from the progressive movement now is the loss of openness and inclusion…
As an aside I appreciate your posts

V. illegal–openly carrying and bringing a gun to First Amendment event, both.
Cops didn't make an arrest. When she turned herself in, a piece of the gun was missing–charges dropped.
Purely based on how they look, I know which person I would hold in esteem.
Photo is from @petersterne.com's excellent coverage. Scroll down to read both.

But because, in the age of culture war politics, symbolic identity is the battleground.
The student isn’t a person here, they’re a prop in a narrative war.
Try talking to them before you decide what their motives are for presenting themselves as they do.
Engagement > accuracy
Performance > governance
Emotion > evidence
Identity = target
The logic of the algorithm now structures political speech. It rewards those who dramatise difference and punish deviation from the tribe.
In the old times an example of this democratic identify framework was the scouts.
Should a democratic society provide a Default Mode Network identity framework in its modeling.

Epistemic decay perfectly describes what's happening in the USA.
This garbage only comes from one side of the political spectrum.
This ostentative display of rebellion, or whatever this is, will *always* be offensive to more conservative people (it's probably what they're looking for anyway)
It’s to define who belongs in the public. This student is being told, implicitly and explicitly, you don’t. That’s what makes this moment chilling. That’s why it matters.
