A spontaneous strike at the Louvre shut down the world's most-visited museum on Monday.

Workers refused to take up their posts in frustration at "overtourism" and what they call an an institution crumbling from within.

Yep. I’ve been caught up in travel strikes a few times, so I’m sanguine about it (being pro-labour + resourceful, I guess?). The big French travel strike in Dec 2019 forced me to use BlaBla car (no trains), so I got rides between Carca and Toulouse with awesome chatty locals instead. Total win.

I was in Paris in April. I did not go to most of The Sights, had my own list. The wait at Notre, Dame was over 2 hours just to get in. Day-tourists with wheelie packs everywhere. I see why the French are exhausted.

I stayed 3 nights in Marais, walked everywhere, ate out of tiny markets, had fun.

This happened in my Canadian city last year when the entire fed-up staff of a posh, award-winning restaurant quit (FULLY QUIT) two hours before opening one night because the chef-owner—we later learned—was a boss from hell.

I miss the food, but I was SO PROUD of their stand. 👊 Pretty rare here.

We had to go to a lottery for many things in our national park system. You have to protect stuff. Too many people can destroy what you love.

We're going to need re-balancing of travel. But I do notice that in Spain the problem is more AirBnB-type services, cost of housing, rude tourists of every stripe in apartment buildings-- And cutting corners on employees.

Yup. I saw Bryce as a child, and it was awesome. But I don't know if I'll make it to the parks I haven't seen, or the monuments.

I went to Bandelier Nat M but was warned and was there at opening. So I could soak up some vibes before crowds.

We cannot lose federal/state land. We need this heritage.

Having just spent 2 weeks in an Airbnb in Spain, i absolutely agree. Almost everyone in that building was a tourist. Of course I love visiting places, but not when it pushes out the locals who make the places worth visiting in the first place. 😔
