Seattle, feeling the pinch from lack of Canadian tourism with border crossings down 50%, have started a tourism campaign where local restaurants/hotels take Canadian dollars at par this weekend for the annual Jays-Mariners series

I watched the Jays Mariners game tonight, playing in Seattle. This weekend series is played every year, and fans from Vancouver / Lower Mainland usually pour in to town, spend piles of money, and fill the stands. Tonight the stadium was half full and there were maybe 10 Jays jerseys or hats visible.
Yup. People are like "Seattle is blue! They voted Dem!" That doesn't change the fact that ICE has just as much arbitrary Gestapo power in Seattle as in Texas. The most progressive parts of Nazi Germany were still, alas, in Nazi Germany.
The US is dangerous now for Canadians. The massive disinformation campaign during our election, funding the convoy, funding of the Alberta separatist minority, tariffs, threats to annex us, and the knowledge that a border guard can put us in jail for an opinion… sorry but a hard pass for most of us
Hard pass from this Canadian. Love Seattle but zero traveling to the US. You couldn't pay me. I appreciate my integrity more than extra pocket change. 💯 🇨🇦
lol
I used to go to Seattle a LOT to shop. I don't care what kind of discount they offer. They could put me up at the Fairmont Olympia and I'd still say "Fuck You".
The US is not safe for Canadians or other people. Any country that ignores human rights is not going to be a positive tourist place. Holding people without due process is unlawful and unethical.
Nope. Not interested. Mr Trump needs to be gone and ICE needs to be brought to heel. I'm a middle-aged, middle-class, white-guy so I'm not at much risk. But the risk still isn't worth it. Neither is the hassle I expect to endure. Nor is the anxiety of just being at risk. So hard pass.
Sort your government out first.
Canadians don’t like being threatened with annexation nor bullies breaking the trade agreements THEY THEMSELVES NEGOTIATED.
And that’s just the first two reasons. 🖕🏼
They could accept Canadian Tire money at par and it wouldn’t move me off this couch. Once Washington state controls its northern border, I’ll consider it.
As a Seattle-area Brit, I would love to see our Canadian friends, but I'm certainly not going to risk a border crossing just for fun, and I'm completely unsurprised if they won't either.
It's like they don't understand at all why nobody's going to the U.S. It's certainly not about the difference between the US and Canadian dollar. Unless you can guarantee that a non-U.S. citizen won't wind up in a jail cell, all bets are off.
Seattle is 8% Trump voters. Doesn’t matter, Canadians should keep themselves safe because Seattle can’t protect them from the border cops or municipal cops or ICE.
perhaps they should start a citizenry campaign demanding that their govt stop harassing, intimidating, detaining and potentially incarcerating Canadians crossing border to visit/shop in their city.
Look, I do feel bad for solidly Blue cities that are having their livelihoods stripped away by the regime. God knows, they've done what they can to combat the insanity. But I also don't blame Canada for staying away. They should. It's not safe. ICE agents are specifically targeting blue cities.
We'd need a "Get out of jail free card" accepted at any state, federal, or gestapo ICE facility, maybe even some nice white glove limo service at the border or the airport.
They really don't get it yet. I feel sorry for the workers in Washington state. But the business leaders need to get on the phone with Trump and the GOP.
You could double or triple the discount. Most Canadians aren't going to go down there.
(For the record, I think it's a nice gesture, but... don't think it's going to help tourism. It's a nice idea but I'm not sure a 30% Off coupon is enough to potentially get thrown in a Central American gulag because some juiced-up border guard from Blaine, Washington doesn't like your tweets)
I just personally heard a story from a friend who had to cross the border, and was asked point-blank by the border guard in Niagara Falls "what are your feelings on President Trump"
How do you even respond to that? Why should you have to?
Even 20 years ago returning to the US across the Michigan border, we had gotten a Canadian flag for the car antenna and were detained by border patrol for over an hour and when we came back out the flag was gone. One of the three of us had even used their military ID.
I can only imagine my response would be "Wait, are you saying that my admission into your country is contingent on how I feel about your current president...?"
Yup. It’s not the money, it’s the authoritarian regime that is threatening to destroy our economy and force us to become second-class citizens in an American empire. Coupons don’t really paper over that.
Why on earth is the US CBP allowed to ask that? You aren’t thought police.
I also think that preclearance is infinitely better at this time.
Last week my dad (old white engineer) had to pop down to Philadelphia for a day trip to meet clients. He said customs at YYZ T3 was pretty fast.
I mean it's kind of a hard sell travelling to the US for discounts when the admin is openly mulling suspending habeas corpus.
There are so many travel destinations where they still have Magna Carta level legal protections.
Tell Seattle Trump's masked goon squad just arrested an elected mayor for protesting ICE detentions. We are way beyond tariff/51st state outrage at this point.
When will they get through their thick heads? It's not about the exchange rate or how many Canadian flags you wave it's about our lives and our freedom, that's far too precious to gamble with just to see a ball game.
Obviously Canucks arent boycotting travel to the US for financial reasons, these pleas from Mayors & Governors to Canadians are just tone deaf. The point of the boycott is to hurt the US economy in response the US’s unprovoked attack on ours. If states arent happy they should focus on their own govt

Seattle, you can go fuck yourselves.
Until that despot is removed from office, there is not a chance in hell anyone from my family is going to grace your city, state, or country.
California is blue and their complicit governor Gavin Newsom's first guest on his new podcast was neo-nazi Charlie Kirk.
Hellllll no
You are still in the United States. You are still on fascist soil.

Scary stuff.
And it is exactly why as a Frenchman I am not going back stateside before a LONG time. F#ck Trump and f#ck his enablers and millions of voters.
Might work better.
Just sayin'.
Thats fine. isolation granted.

it’s about respect and trust
When that happens, then maybe...
I certainly don’t expect foreign visitors to risk it- my family is getting out of here as soon as feasible.

Think I'll pass!

"Donald Trump? The real estate tycoon?"

If traveling to the US you should use an airport with US customs pre-clearance.
There they can't detain you unless you break a law -- and even in that case you'd be arrested and charged by the RCMP, not Americans.
"I don't follow politics. I find it too stressful. He was that guy who had a TV show originally, right?"
If they persisted I would start complaining about how Toronto hasn't won a Stanley Cup in my lifetime and that is my biggest concern.

Discount chowder totally erases the degrading treatment of Canadians, threats of annexation, and USA's prison torture camp.
Resist your fascist coup and shield your community members from ICE or gtfo.
No market research. No media literacy.
Maybe Seattle could run that up their upline for some correction, if they want to have Canadians coming to their city again.
