Even in best of times, being a researcher in academia has always been tough, for most, in terms of time to do science. (it's not much different being soft money btw)

Einstein made jokes that the best way to do science was not to be in academia. But, yep, things are exacerbated or even worse now.

My grad student who was offered a postdoc position was just told that it would be 82 weeks for the visa approval, so I’m not sure Canada’s an option. And many European countries have struggled to hire enough of their own citizens, so I doubt there’s going to be a significant number of opportunities.
