I wouldn't say the show is abuse, though. They know exactly what experience they are signing up for. It's a crazy choice, but i guess they feel the payout is worth it. It's not a good look, in real life, though.

And lastly you’re going to be abused no matter what job you’re at especially a service job. Retail I’ve gotten death threats for not having batteries in stock or having a bottle of water at the register. It’s never ok but the show has been on for awhile and he would have been cancelled by now.
