Framing the question assumes the premise that the GOP is a fixed entity, which of course it isn't. Also, in 2025, Trump IS the GOP, so the question as asked doesn't even make sense any more.
I caution against interpreting history in hindsight. One can usually make up stories how everything was logical...
It's reasonable to try to understand the causes and factors that led to this particular outcome! That doesn't mean they were inevitable.
