I'm shocked no one recalls the discussion that Max was used because legacy contracts required higher rates for showing media on 'HBO'. Seems like that legal effort didn't come to much so they are abandoning it.
The Discovery merger was a catastrophe, and HBO got screwed in the process. I’ve never seen such willful destruction of a brand’s identity as what Discovery did to HBO, it was idiotic and misplaced.
Correction: Trump’s obliteration of America’s brand tops the all-time brand catastrophe list.
the only problem with this gif is that the people responsible for this decision wouldn't know hard work or hardship if it sat on their faces and farted
An idea comes to me - maybe this is in preparation to sell it off. Put the name in the news cycle a bit and it also makes the announcement from the new owner a little more punchy.
Yeah when I thought "Max" Cinamax did come to mind and besides "SkinaMax" when I though Cinamax I though "that channel that got the movies months after HBO did". so it was surprising that they dropped the "HBO" part/
Right that was the most baffling part to me. Were they trying to capitalize on customers confusing the two brands? Were the parent company Warner Bros trying to merge the two brands into one outlet? It never really made sense to me.
To me the change to hbo max makes sense. It's a combination service of hbo and Cinemax. That's fine but they got rid of the part of the brand name that actually meant something when they just called it max. Sorry that I didn't make that clear.
bruh who not stealing from this fuckass dipshit corpo at this point like the dude who made this decision probably makes 100x what the average person does lmao. It's morally correct to pirate their shit
Is it cause they aren't gonna be shoving horrible discovery content on us while killing off all the animation and good films? Or is it just the stupid ass name change?
I’m sure if they keep renaming it a bunch of times, it’ll only help the brand. 🫠
They were obviously wrong-headed to drop the HBO branding in the first place, replacing it with something utterly generic. HBO Max is what it should have been all along.
I hope that one day, I get brain damaged enough to land a position like this, where I get paid to screw something up, then get paid even MORE to undo what I did in the first place.
This is what this feels like to me: This summer Apple plans to release their new iphone 17 Retro with all the features you miss like a home button, a lightning connector and a separate 3.5mm headphone jack....because it's literally an iphone 8.
This entire thing is a perfect example of why mandatory 8 hour work days are nonsense. Too many people make up ways to fill this time, and that time gets filled with "lets change HBO to Max."
I mean... WTF even *was* Max? Did Cinemax buy HBO and change it to Max? Or was it just some... random ass word to begin with that had nothing to do with Cinemax? Always found it odd.
“We’re going full steam ahead with some exciting new changes and we’re finally on the right track. We’re dropping the B. From now on, we’re HO, the finest model railroad streaming service on the planet.”
This was an obvious mistake from the start. The HBO brand is known for "prestige" tv with legacy programming and the decision to walk away form that brand equity was marketing malpractice.

It was never just branding nonsense.
Who knew?

Goddamn I am so mad everyday that the fucking dumbest people have all the money and power.
They're never getting my money ever again.
Zaslav is a plague.

Why all the unforced errors? 🤦♂️
On my dad’s 6100 PowerMac.
I didn’t get paid but it did teach me the tenacity necessary to work on computers professionally.
Us: Then why did you even CHANGE it?
RETURN OF THE MAX, here we go!
RETURN OF THE MAX, oh my God!
we used to call it HOBOGO back in the day
Then we will get it’s final evolution, Home Box Office
📺🐿️
Naturally.
Coke -> New Coke -> Classic Coke.
Home Box Office -> HBO -> HBO Max -> Max -> HBO Max
Have I missed anything?
But the fun thing is, I bet you every time some idiot filled ad agency and ‘creative team’ got paid a fortune.
Hilarious.
