Feeling this. Had to replace our furnace and hot water heater the first year. Have already had to replace the entire roof. Basement flooded and wasn't covered by insurance. Siding is deteriorating, windows are original from 1985, but first up is fixing a wiring issue.
I've been housed by my job, rented, & then owned a home. Now I live as a caretaker in my mom's home (while still working full time).
I'm so over home ownership. But also tired of living somewhere I can't control.
I guess I need to camp for the rest of my life. 🤷🏽♀️
Having lived through that, bless you. You’re doing an incredibly difficult difficult thing out of love and deserve praise and a good night’s sleep. ❤️🩹
Two things I can't afford bc of the cost of upkeep: home ownership and pet ownership. And the more I read about people's issues with them, the more I know that I could never.
I swear the house senses when there is a small windfall of money that comes in. "I do believe it is time for a significant leak." "let's rot. Just fucking rot."
This made me 🤔 of how Japan regulates house prices by everyone acknowledging that houses themselves have a finite working life and it's only the land that accrues extra value over time. That said, all the extra earthquakes, typhoons and kaiju they get will shape opinions that way I guess
Our pipes are a ticking time bomb (galvanized, 70 years old) and I know it’s just a matter of time before we have to get the whole house repiped but I am in denial
Thoughts and prayers. Pro tip for when the time comes: if you go copper make sure they use the rigid copper and not the bendy copper, esp if you're in a hard water area; that was our downfall.
We are in the same spot on a downed fence, with the added complication that it's the one we share with neighbors and I keep dreading having to discuss it before making decisions like a grownup. Home ownership, amirite?
Anyway right now we’re finally getting a ventilation fan in our bathroom and I am struggling to understand why they have been loudly sawing things for like 45 minutes straight
I feel this! We are getting windows replaced and everyone is in sensory overload. I have just given up for the day. Headphones all around and hope for the best.
Unsolicited advice but make sure it has a timer switch or humidity sensor because perpetually running bathroom exhaust fans are one of the primary causes of house fires.
Motion sensor switches are also a good option especially if it's primarily for a toilet cubby. Tp-link kasa has some remarkably capable Wi-Fi switches for about $20.
Easy to install yourself if it has a neutral (white) wire in the junction box behind the switch.
Pro tip: have a tree fall on the fence - and then have your insurance company screw up on their end and misstate coverage/send incorrect estimates, resulting in them finally paying for a full repair because they don't want to deal with a potential lawsuit because they put the wrong things in writing
Our front fence is awful and falling apart and somebody in fence sales thought they could, I dunno, neg us into replacing it by sticking a business card into it? Haha, no. (We're going to rip it out & plant a hedge this year)
that's tough. hopefully you can find s way to replace it that's affordable. maybe a city home improvement program has loans or something. we are just letting outs rot in place and slowly throwing out the parts that fall over
That’s absolutely right. Rent is the maximum you’ll pay to live in a place and the mortgage is the minimum you’ll pay to live (plus the other expenses). With this economy people should consider renting vs buying very seriously
I had an addition put on the house. This was the 1st really big rain since they finished. I called the architect and she sent someone over who painted something up there. So just waiting for the nxt big rain to see if that worked. No cost (thankfully) this time. Oh & no such thing as house ins here.
In general we don’t pay a ton more than we did to rent— although part of that is that we were able to buy when interest rates were really low. But the way repairs can hit as a big sum you need to have all at once…that’s different
Hilariously the entire premise behind suburban home ownership was to keep the working man so busy maintaining his house he’d never have to time to think about communism.
Having had to replace the bathroom, all the windows, half of the roof, and have 2 rounds of damp proofing done - all in the past 18 months - really makes me question whether this is actually better than paying rent 😫 (internal door replacement is next on the list...)

(I'm not saying it's a GOOD idea.)
