Do you feel people REALLY think games like Starfield, Dragons Dogma 2, or Dragon Age Veilguard are really "bad" games... or just a narrative spun to generate more traffic on videos about higher profile games? Cause in no way can I see these as bad, disappointing to some, absolutely, but bad?
Comments
But you cannot divorce these games from their studios and predecessors. Starfield is a MASSIVE step backwards in terms of choice and meaningful exploration. Veilguard is tonally, artistically, mechanically, and narratively divorced from all prev titles
Bad
These games don't exist in a vacuum. They are part of franchises or a dev's catalogue. They are competently made and are playable, but what they offer is either severely lacking or just....bad
But even if you're not a crotchety old gamer (like me) where you see the features and mechanics stripped out by every iteration you're still a gamer in 2024 that has damn awesome titles to compare & contrast against. ala BG3 vs Veilguard choices
Haven't played Veilguard yet, but probably will.
I’m not a fan of turn based RPGs except Pokémon, so any game that has turn based mechanics is something that I dislike. Almost anything you see that criticizes Dragon’s Quest isn’t on that part, but that it’s too “woke”
Solid 6/10 games that might appeal to a small circle of fans but I wouldn't recommend to a wider audience.
The issue with Starfield is that it was missing one core 'Bethesda' component, and that's world building, which is one of Bethesdas greatest strengths. Was it bad ? No.
I think it's either:
1. Manufactured rage bait for the clicks
2. Desperation to be the in-group of said manufactured rage bait
I don’t think any of them are bad games.
I genuinely believe there are very few actually “bad” games. Just ones that don’t live up to hype, or are different to what some people wanted.
DA:V for instance. You can’t expect it to be the same as DAO which was released 15 years ago.
Starfield remains extremely disappointing to me, and it's honestly only gotten moreso with time.
Haven't played DA4 yet, so can't judge.
Everything is either garbage or Amazing/Perfect in the critic industry. And it skews the narrative. No, these games aren't that bad.
Like sure, they all have problems, but don’t most games?
However I just don't talk about them or engage with them at all, vs. rage bait YouTubers that make a career out of hating things. That's how you can tell how sincere someone is.
Truth is I find people do this to themselves often with expectations for what a game is going to be instead of playing it for what it is.
I was in college for this stuff and these are still impressive even one model is insane work tbh
On the subject of Starfield, I desperately want to like the game but man I just couldn’t get into it lol
What little fun I have in starfield is eclipsed by the awful story, quest design, & boring gameplay
So much wasted potential, everything felt half assed and incomplete.
a lot of people blame either woke or some other irrelevant, nonexistent issue to the game's dislike
Randy Pitchford was purely at fault due to firing Claptrap's VA (who was the guy keeping the story good) and ruining the...
with little to no respect for characters like Zer0 and Axton by making them either basically just a quest giver or a flanderized turret-fucker
I'm sure if any of these games were from newer indie devs they'd be heavily praised, but for these AAA devs, the bar is just higher.
But playing some of those games… I just expect AAA games to be better. Yes, I do think they’re subpar.
When an indie is more fun and better written than a game that cost millions of dollars, something’s wrong.
It also kinda depends how you’d define “bad” tho. For some reason, there’s a large portion of the gaming community that sees a 7 out of 10 as “bad”.
People have to accept that every game won’t hit for them all the same and be okay with it.
I wish more people knew how to have opinions and share them. The blind parroting is sad.
I'm a massive Dragon's Dogma fan who felt let down by DD2, but I'm glad it was still good in its own right and gave the series a needed boost in the gaming community as a whole.
Make owns experience and activate refund if needed.
And it was not enough fun to actually finish it.
Most people mean "bad" to be "mediocre" too.
Dragons Dogma 2 gets very repetitive.
Haven't played new Dragon Age.
Would I call them bad? Not really, but they aren't really worth playing either. Mediocre.
Personally I love a 6/7, flaws and all. Not every game needs to be a game changer.
DATV is very niche, same with DD2
Starfield had a lot riding on it, but also new ip, unknown entity
From what I heard, none of these games are terrible and you would think from what you see online that they are the WORSE
I've been playing since launch, and the game is great. Not perfect, but still great.
Almost like the grift depends on name recognition
IMO both games have a pretty bad take on it and that, for me, makes them bad games with wasted potential.
Everything has to be the “worst ever” now, discounting the reality of it
