He was sitting on the fence at the back of the property! He kept going “whock!” I was trying to figure out wtf this round bird with a white thing on its head was, because it did not fit my mental image of quail!

Fair, fair. Also the *goodest* boi. In this house we stan Mumphrey. (I have read Harriet to more people than you would expect. Several of them over the age of 30.)
this makes me feel like maybe I am not alone in struggling to get good pictures of animals (I can never get my phone's damn camera to load up fast enough, nor focus!!)
I refuse to get a new phone because my (old) phone works fine. Result: many bad pictures and some equally bad video of birds I saw on the Beaufort coast, last summer. I have other, similar bad pics/videos but some of those birds were lifers, very badly recorded, because phone.
When I lived in Salt Lake for grad school, we had the Gambels quail, just tootling around the neighborhood, with their funny little head bobbles. So fabulous!
Here we have Hungarian Partridge, who like to gather in a circle under the rustic basketball hoop at the cabin. They have serious business!
Did he snack on any of the chicken feed? The place I saw them was someone’s yard a guide took me to as owner regularly put food out for a local covey under some cover. I thought I might die of the squee. (A sometimes fatal complication of birding when confronted with an unbelievably cute lifer)
when I first joined this site, I shared MANY bad pics and videos to a bird feed. Including of several life-birds I saw on the Beaufort coast last summer. My phone is old, but the birds were AMAZING. People were quite polite about it.
Is that a fence, or part of a specific plant support? Can't recall seeing a fence made of 4x4s, and it looks cool, tbh. Sturdy as a trellis, with the wire.
OH MY GOD that is amazing! Native quail! Native quail! (Weeps silently in the bobwhite haven't found the habitat I'm trying to build for them yet) (but I did get a WOODCOCK and that was really exciting)
That tufty thing is the most ridiculous headgear imaginable. The first time I saw it, it was on a group of four birds running for cover outside the Bitter Lake NWR headquarters, and I was immediately looking around for Muppeteers.
At first I was staring at it going “Is that a fledgling with fluff on its head? But it’s way too early and also it’s obviously a game bird or something…”
Occasionally we see California quail at my grandad's. They're so stereotypically adorable and it's charming as heck. (Also sometimes a bobcat family, but you can't add them to your bird list)
When I got my last tattoo the artist was telling me how much he loves quail and how cool it was to see families of quail walking all in a line. (It's a roadrunner so we were talking about cool birds in the Albuquerque area.)

I'm sure if I could see faces I'd have gotten some odd looks.
I remain unapologetic.
