17K libraries vs 13,544 McDonalds - 2024
Don't pretend everybody has the money to access the internet.
And have for a long time, now I think of it. It used to be free, basic television did.
Can't say that anymore.
There weren't any computers then. Most people didn't have cars. Television didn't exist. The polio vaccine hadn't come into being. Corn syrup wasn't a thing.
Shall we go on?
But I doubt we'll see nearly that much.
He's picking such incompetent morons, they'll simply fuck it up to a manageable degree - such that Democrats will be brought in to fix it again.
And the cycle will repeat. Ad infinitum, ad nauseam.
I refuse to cede this country to that fucking asshole.
But there are still libraries in the red states.
This is America. There are public libraries everywhere.
Far more public libraries than abortion clinics, that's for damned sure.
Do yourself a favor and ask for books as gifts this year and start a small collection, just in case.
In the UK they have been closing public libraries for decades. We don't have many left now.
Recently a senior politicians proposed that the teaching of reading from books should be taken out of the school curriculum.
How insane is that?
Really?????
My grandfather was a Head Master and English teacher. He would turn in his grave.
And when the electricity goes out... or the wifi fails...
What the FUCK.
Don't bother learning how to read an analog clock. Don't bother learning to read a MAP. Forget learning to WRITE.
Sigh.
He wrote a "Welcome" message in cursive on his white board on the first day of class a few years ago, and a girl raised her hand and said, deadly earnest...
"Excuse me, I don't know that font."
He swears it's true.
Then again who knows what the score will be in 2028!
And there are STILL more libraries than McDonald's restaurants.
ABORTION. Because mistakes happen.
If one community can do it, there is hope.......
Our problem isn't as much being uneducated as much as it is white supremacy.

I practically lived there before the pandemic, and before going on my MS meds, which reduced my immune system to NIL.
I have been back a couple times, masked, & intend to return soon. I love sitting in the COMFY CHAIRS...
There will always BE people trying to ban books.
It is up to US to stop them.
I'm guessing not too damned many.
I suggest you visit your local public library. They have people there who can help with that.

Efficiency knows no charity.
My god, the number of people responding to this with fatalistic predictions of doom for all libraries in America is FAR more depressing to me than the fact that there are morons all over the place trying to burn books & close libraries.
There always have been. This is nothing new.
Throwing up our hands and wailing about it is NOT the way to combat it.
Responding to your comment with truths is not wailing or fatalistic, it's simply facts that need to be acknowledged because MANY PEOPLE do not know that libraries are losing finding or closing.
It seemed that you didn't know.
What bothers me is the attitude that it's a foregone conclusion that libraries are going to be a thing of the past. That there's nothing to be done.
That seems to be the prevailing attitude in many of these comments.
Nor will our education system fare so well, either.
Hate stole the day, ignorance won it. Misogyny and racism run rampant. All these things are true. It's disheartening as fuck.
But if we're going to sit around bitching and moaning about this shit, we may as well just give up now.
So, choose.
Give up? Or fight?
do anything you can to support ACLU, SPLC, etc....they will be the ones in court battle after court battle to mitigate, or even block the inhumane policies I see coming down the pike.
Left leaning voices need a national and consistent voice. Corporations own all our ...1/2
40+ years without the fairness doctrine, has poisoned our information ecosystem. We need to build from the beginning almost. Corporations always have investments other places that are perhaps more profitable..2/3.
We'll see.
Let's hope you're wrong.
In either case, LIBRARIES will hardly be the front lines.
Libraries will indeed be the front lines because they will be among the first to lose funding. Let alone, autocrats always target intellectuals & books.
I just don't think LIBRARIES are the front line for these people.
Nor do I think they're going to be nearly as competent at theocratic or fascist takeover as they'd like to be.
I had my fears, until I saw the cabinet picks.
It's appalling.
