A friend of mine did a PhD in second language acquisition and the tl/dr is basically duolingo on its own cannot teach you a language. You have to do things like this as well. Otherwise you learn duolingo, not a language.

Yes, this I know. I've read a lot of research saying the same, and it is easy to deduce that knowing what is required to speak, understand, read, and write a language is beyond any single app especially Duo.

And foreign language teachers on here and elsewhere have confirmed.

I was doing Duolingo Czech to refresh my primitive learning & make some forward progress but I had to quit it because it kept demanding incorrect answers & I couldn't skip the incorrect exercises. I may never get to go back there, but I love the language.

They always insisted on using demonstratives as a one-to-one replacement for articles. I gave up when they were using adverbs wrong and the gender of nouns started to get wonky. It was a couple days after they announced they were using ai too, so I thought it would get worse.

I started doing regular little conversations with one of my coworkers in Portuguese a couple weeks ago, and in some ways it felt like starting completely over, even though I've been doing Duolingo daily in Portuguese for months. Ah well.

Also, coworkers adds a bit of stress because you're already in a vulnerable position.

It would have to be people you really trust not to judge so you feel comfortable enough to speak and not worry about mistakes.

There is a great Google extension, free, call Language Reactor, that let's you watch programming on Netflix with both languages as subtitles and also gives you a great vocabulary list pulled from the film. When you click on the word it gives you a sound clip to hear it in.

This is fantastic news for my college child who is self-studying Hindi. Also, as a graduate from UT Austin when it was basically free, it really pleases me that there are still free resources for the public there.
