I think people think Duolingo or some other app or nothing.
Best to use multiple resources, especially if they are free.
And foreign language teachers on here and elsewhere have confirmed.

It would have to be people you really trust not to judge so you feel comfortable enough to speak and not worry about mistakes.
It's like Sheldon on Big Bang saying he could swim by learning from the internet and doing it on the floor. It's about can we remember words in the moment and how to string them together.
