Hugely important - and depressingly resonant - thread George. But particularly replying to this part to ask if there has ever been an example of such "massive political effort" producing a lasting functioning democracy? I can't think of one but hope I'm wrong

Amen to that Zarah
grotesque to see Labour do Tory work in Tory economic straight-jacket.
& 4 what?
Β£22bn "black hole" doesn't even stand up & growth forecasts drop off a cliff after next year (OBR)
Meanwhile they maintain Tory fetish against rejoining EU, our biggest and closest trading partnerπ‘

Damn right Mia
this side of the pond too
Musk already corrupted US democracy
Now seeks same in UK & Germany
He has zero legitimacy to do so. What 2 do?
1. ban donations
2. Brazil showed how 2 shut Twitter. How about UK, EU do same?
3. Withdraw roadworthiness licence for Tesla cars
Any more?

CPTPP may be of strategic value but useless economically
Gravity works for trade
Asia ~10x further away than EU
So $10 market opportunity in Asia is worth ~ same to UK as a $1 opportunity in EU
So why Starmer/Reeves aping populists when many in UK are cold & hungry 4 want of EU economic growth?π‘

Totally agree - they don't yet have their hands on the levers of state power ... but the writing's on the wall for 2028/2029 GE.
You gotta hope Starmer et al are learning & will implement lessons from Nov5th US Pres.
UK democracy is just as fragile & vulnerable 2 abuse - especially by dark moneyπ‘

I'm a Brit
So I tread carefully in other countries' politics
But can anyone explain to me how almost 80 MILLION Americans thought these scenes represented a vision of patriotism and democracy worth voting for again? π±π€¦ββοΈ

Fascinating piece of research - congratulationsππ»
But can you clarify Fig 5 further for me please? Blue line (TAV) seems to bear out your thesis well. But surely yellow line (TA) shows similar but negative info value? eg could run a super long-short between TAV and TA?
What am I missing please?

The "scientific process" is a wonder to behold, all the way from theory 2 experimentatal demo.
None more so than Peter Higgs & his eponymous boson
But I read that Higgs conveys mass in all known particles except the Higgs boson itself. If so, is that a fatal flaw 4 it as a unifying field theory?π€

Even from 'over here' (UK) I can see how pathetic McConnell's position is.
His party has debased every cherished democratic institution and norm since Trump 1.0 - and it promises to take a wrecking ball to the rest in Trump 2.0.
Couple of judges extending their tenure is at least within the lawππ»

Agreed. Which begs the next big question: do you think Trump has the motivation to press home that advantage against Russia? My fear is that his rhetoric suggests that he would prefer to "get it done (peace) on Day 1" around the current battle lines.

Thank you Maria for painting what feels to be a scenario more rooted in the realpolitik of Putin's ambitions for post-Soviet empire-building
But will his economy allow him to prosecute that vision for much longer?

Huge respect β to your nephew Sredni. I worked in a related field for my postgrad many many years ago and am in awe of Andrew's technical skills
Do you know if he plans to come and join us on this platform - away from X where the lizards now roam?
