Data-backed thread about the costs of immigration, deportation, and federal law enforcement.

This lot in Northside is CHEAP. That's because it faces I-74. Fine if you want a convenient urban spot to build, though. Send me a note and we'll employ Passive House principles to keep that house quiet and breathing fresh air. www.coldwellbankerhomes.com/oh/cincinnat...

Protected bike lanes have a near-magical ability to produce cyclists. This new study of 28 US cities finds that census block groups w/protected bike lanes expanded bike commuting almost 2x faster than those w/standard bike lanes & >4x faster than those w/o new lanes. www.nature.com/articles/s44...

"The message is clear: we have lost a great deal in our collective efforts to accommodate the automobile. We have lost so much that some can't even see it."

'Experts say legalizing such single-stair floor plans can enable small-lot infill development to help address the housing shortage through “gentle density.”' indeed! nextcity.org/urbanist-new...

Just imagine investing this much money, time, energy, political will & space into smart walking, biking & transit infrastructure. There are maybe thousands of these. They not only induce a lot more driving, they make our cities think they can’t afford transport solutions that would ACTUALLY work.

Handing out pardons to public officials convicted of bribery and public corruption is a big middle finger from Donald Trump right in the face of everyday Ohioans. "Trump pardons PG Sittenfeld, ex-Cincinnati councilman convicted of bribery." buff.ly/1pzkksY

Trains frickin’ rip. Especially the way Switzerland does them

The MAHA Report cites studies that don’t exist. W/ @emilykennard.bsky.social: www.notus.org/health-scien...

It has been zero (0) days since I have been asked if I have a fax machine. Prior to this, that count was at least (7,000).

"When critics of speed cameras say it’s a “cash grab,” I’m now reasonably certain it’s grabbing it from the right people and changing their behaviour in the process. Cameras should be on every block." -Shawn Micallef from 2021 and still true today.

You don't need to put an Out-Of-Office email autoresponder on over a holiday weekend. Emails aren't urgent.

Make art weird and ugly enough that no machine can emulate it

For at least half a century, the National Weather Service has been an around-the-clock operation. But due to DOGE cuts, that is no longer possible in some parts of the country. America is infinitely less safe. Tens of millions of lives are being endangered by Trump and DOGE. GIFT: wapo.st/4k1Ha8B

For the umpteenth - but almost certainly not last time - the institutions of the American economy depend on the institutions of American democracy.

My latest Forbes article is all about SUVs. Specifically, it delves into two new research papers - one from traffic engineering, and one from public health - that shows how these increasingly-popular (and increasingly large) vehicles come with major downsides 🧪 www.forbes.com/sites/laurie...

“One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss.” “Which means that Copenhagen, a city of 1.2 million people, saves $357 million a year on health costs because something like 80% of its population commutes by bike.” Via @grist.org grist.org/biking/one-m...

Cincinnati leaders can still do this. The lessons are right there.

This whole thread (and link) are packed with valuable info to help build better and safer cities.

great write up of this loser's grift campaign

So, you want a standardized housing library, but we don’t have standardized zoning… Where to start? What should be the common baseline a state or province should mandate for all cities? Let’s start with 10 baseline rules for coach houses / lane houses: (Thread)

Our country is in a housing crisis and President Trump's tariff chaos is making it worse. Homebuilders expect his tariffs to raise the cost of building a new home by as much as $10,000. We’re sending a clear message: America can’t afford Trump’s tariffs.
