Metro Transit urges Haligonians to use the new loonie (1988)

Cool to see bike share in Halifax, although private systems are more expensive than city-owned services like BIXI or BikeShareTO. What makes bike share so compelling for me is that I get a seasonal membership for $16 a month and then *every single trip is free* if it’s under 45 minutes.

some of my personal frustration with Canadian housing policy stems from the fact that the big, diverse cities I always wanted to settle in are now prohibitively costly if you don't quite fit in among Nova Scotians, a contingent of yokels will regularly remind you through street harassment

Stop what you’re doing and watch this immediately. Canadian doctors returned from Gaza and are sharing what they witnessed and lived. They are demanding action from Mark Carney. Their testimony is our failure.

I keep meeting Halifax cyclists who are taking dangerous routes to/from the Chain of Lakes Trail (COLT) simply because they don't know the safer way. I found out that my brother's method was to cycle on the Bayers Road ramp, merging with traffic flying off the highway (pictured below). #BikeHfx

The wealthy Kits homeowner coalition seems to have won its legal battle against the desperately needed Arbutus supportive housing project. This is what I’m talking about when I say zoning should be abolished. It’s weaponized by the rich to exclude the poor. That is the MAIN use case!

I believe the design of this segment of Dutch Village Road is a vestige from when it was the entrance to Highway 102, hence the right-turn slip lanes and five-lane cross section. In this sense it is a bit like Cogswell, which was overbuilt relative to its modern-day role in the traffic network.

Dutch Village Road curb line (now vs. 2023), bike lanes still to come. #BikeHfx

Anecdotally, every conversation I have with Hong Kong friends who moved to Canada in recent years is about regret and/or hardship. I talked to a service worker who seemed physically pained by how much he missed India.

I’m slowly starting to think about buying my first home, and I’m already looking forward to being able to say “I own a home that will likely lose value if more homes are built around here and prices go down. I still want these homes because I bought my home to live in, not as an investment.”

StatsCan still ranks HRM second in the country for commuting by active transportation. National average 6.0%, Victoria 18.7%, Halifax 12.3% How does our bike network stack up against other cities? 1/8

"The housing crisis threatens not just our prosperity but also our fundamental stability as a country" – do homeowners see it? Today marks one year since Halifax council passed its HAF reform package. With Robertson's remarks, the glimmer of hope I felt at that time has somewhat faded.

I haven't fully caught up on today's TSC meeting but I did catch Jen's great presentation on Kidical Mass Halifax – "the largest kidical mass community in Canada" – and growing community enthusiasm for more inclusive transportation planning.

The long form video is a must watch! One thing I miss about 2020 is the sense that it felt like we were all in it together which has sadly given way to the hyper-individualism of the last few years.

well this is sad news (for Hong Kong railfans at least)

I uploaded a new version of my Halifax bikeway map to Wikipedia with a note about how the Albro Lake Rd bike lane seems to be up in the air. Among other changes, I also added the extended Penhorn greenway, marked Almon St as completed (more or less), and added the Woodside–Shearwater bikeway.

The Integrated Mobility Plan (2017) proposed two bike routes through Dartmouth North: one a confusing series of bikeways on Farrell, Catherine, Alfred, Brule, Pinecrest, Pinehill Lookoff Park, and True North Crescent; and a more straightforward (1/4) #BikeHfx

I think it’s kind of interesting that so many cultural and political elites decided “learning loss” from remote schooling during a pandemic was so severe it was worth ignoring medical safety, while actual learning loss from AI is pervasive and growing and they all want to impose more of it on us.

Good morning! The Halifax Cycling Coalition is again running free bike valet parking at the Blue Nose Marathon (today and tomorrow). We are located next to the finish line, on the side of the Oval nearest the Commons fountain.
