7/7 “Instead of bankrolling polluters, governments should be backing wind and solar, storage, smarter grids, and demand-side solutions that give us back control of our power systems by ending fossil fuel dependence for good” says @julietphillips.bsky.social

6/7 Campaigners are calling on national governments to urgently reconsider all market mechanisms that favour fossil fuel power plants and, instead, prioritise support for clean flexibility solutions like storage, interconnection and grid enhancing technologies.

5/7 Czech energy giant EP Group, the parent company of EPH, has raked in over €4 billion in capacity contracts awarded by national governments to gas plants since 2015. It’s aggressively developing fossil gas assets all over Europe and greenwashing its image.

4/7 In Poland, companies like PGE don't even hide how capacity markets benefit them.
It’s a blow to households and businesses across 🇵🇱 that are investing in renewable energy, only for their efforts to be undermined by a subsidy system that helps fossil fuel companies to gatekeep the power market.

3/7 In Europe, just 10 companies have received contracts worth €21.4B from 🇫🇷 🇬🇧 🇧🇪 🇵🇱 🇮🇹 🇮🇪. These fossil gas freeloaders aren’t just making consumers’ foot the bill, but in cases, these companies have been found to be actively delaying the energy transition.

2/7 Capacity markets are an energy security tool in 🇫🇷 🇬🇧 🇧🇪 🇵🇱 🇮🇹 🇮🇪.
Auctions are held, with contracts then provided to energy companies to ensure electricity demand can be met - but plants may never be called on to provide power. These contracts are then paid for via energy bills.

6/6 In short: Spain is looking to seize this moment to accelerate the clean energy transition. We urge other countries who are misleadingly trying to exploit the blackout to justify more #fossilfuels to take note.

5/6 Spain’s proposed new law fixes that.
💡 It allows renewables to help manage voltage and get compensated for doing so — ending fossil gatekeeping of essential grid services.

4/6 And here's the kicker:
A government report confirmed that the blackout was caused by a voltage surge not properly controlled by fossil gas and nuclear plant operators. These operators are paid to manage voltage. On the day of the blackout — they failed.

3/6 As 🇪🇸 Ecological Transition Minister Sara Aagesen said: “Renewables are giving Spain the opportunity to achieve very important energy independence in a geopolitically vulnerable world.”

The measures include:
✅ Incentivising energy storage
✅ Easing deadlines for new wind & solar PV
✅ Electrifying industry, transport & buildings
This is system transformation in action.

Even better news? Spain 🇪🇸 and Italy 🇮🇹 are set to follow suit in the coming months!
With 15 European countries now operating coal-free power systems, #coal in Europe isn’t just in retreat, it’s a power source of the past.

5/5 In short, local govts can drive the energy transition by taking the lead in moving away from fossil fuels & toward clean, fair, & sustainable energy systems, resulting in lower electricity bills, and more resilient communities.

4/5 Renovating schools, gyms, libraries, and other public buildings and even streets is one of the fastest ways to cut emissions, save money, and improve comfort.

3/5 A just & inclusive energy transition needs community engagement & fair distribution of benefits. Many municipalities are already setting up energy desks or one-stop shops to provide residents with technical guidance, financial support, & assistance in accessing national and regional incentives.

2/5 🇮🇹 is home to some of the sunniest cities in Europe, making rooftops a major untapped resource for ☀️ power!
In Ravenna, solar panels are showing how flexible energy systems can improve #renewableenergy storage, manage demand, and ensure reliable electricity—benefiting both the grid and citizens.

The energy transition provides municipalities with higher resilience against crises in energy supply by reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels. Local govts can increase the safety of their communities by providing electricity security in emergencies through renewables & energy storage systems.

Supporting residents to deploy renewables can make a difference to their monthly costs and lead to a more resilient thriving local economy.
In addition, aligning municipal policies with EU directives and national renewable energy targets can help municipalities access funding and incentives.
