The most immediate way to revitalise the Irish language and stem the flow of young people from rural Ireland would be to ban Airbnb.

Today is the Feast of Blessed Franz Jägerstätter, who refused to take an oath of loyalty to Hitler and was martyred. He once said, "If the Church stays silent in the face of what is happening, what difference would it make if no church were ever opened again?" He was beheaded on 9th August 1943.

Among heterosexual couples over age 50, research finds that divorce rates increase significantly when the wife develops a serious illness but the husband does not; however, no such increase is seen when husbands fall ill but wives do not. www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/soci...

It’s literally like everyone forgot this

New from me: Tim Walz blasted Linda McMahon not knowing what the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, saying "This isn't like nice to have stuff or they're getting special treatment, it's that we've decided that everybody matters." www.independent.co.uk/news/world/a...

Measles exposure alert issued for Shakira concert at MetLife Stadium, NJ health officials say https://gothamist.com/news/measles-exposure-alert-issued-for-shakira-concert-at-metlife-stadium-nj-health-officials-say

Five years ago today the term #LongCovid was first used as a Twitter hashtag. A single tweet by a patient linked together a growing, grassroots movement of people who weren't recovering from Covid. Across the world, we were fighting for recognition and studying our own disease

No boosters for kids is one thing. No first shots - such that first exposure to SARS-CoV-2 comes via infection rather than vaccination - would take kids back to 2020. I can't tell from the NEJM piece what they intend for kids. Old (approved) but not updated vaccines? No boosters? No vaccines at all?

I hope the 10 year plan for NHS will pay attention to psychological factors in system change. Change brings anxiety, loss, insecurity & this gets played out throughout the system. And this on top of widespread burnout. Creating regular space for sharing honest experiences on how it's going is key.

I love this book. It helps me with my autistic kids and would have been a life saver when they were little. It explains things to the non ND moms. Amazing. So helpful.

“This moratorium would mean that even if a company deliberately designs an algorithm that causes foreseeable harm — regardless of how intentional or egregious the misconduct or how devastating the consequences — the company making that bad tech would be unaccountable to lawmakers and the public…”

My food aversion cookbook and guide COLOR TASTE TEXTURE has been called both “funnier than a cookbook has any right to be,” and “life changing.” Built on a foundation on unconditional acceptance of individual sensory needs, for all ages. Written by me, an Autistic classically trained chef.

Tell me again why there's been no move to reintroduce masks more broadly in healthcare facilities in Ontario during a measles outbreak.

I am on clinical service doing ID consults currently. This weekend I saw two patients with COVID. Both were symptomatic enough to require antivirals and steroids. Both were under 65 years old but with comorbidities. COVID is still present, we can't restrict vaccine access for those who want them.

"We have always supported Israel's right to defend Israelis against terrorism. But this escalation is wholly disproportionate," the three Western leaders said in the joint statement, adding that they will not stand by while Netanyahu's government pursues "these egregious actions."

UK govt to seek disqualification of benefit claimants from driving for alleged fraud or failure to return overpayments by DWP. What if people don't have the money? Loss of licence means can't work, have family life. Same won't apply to tax dodgers, thieves. scammers, money launders. Class war.

The air traffic controller shortage, explained.

The value of the BBC is massive - from biteSized school revision to BBC world history, there is simply nothing that rivals it. We should defend it robustly

New report from the BMA on The value of a GP Honestly, gp is the beating heart of healthcare in the UK. And it’s really struggling… cdn.intelligencebank.com/eu/share/qMb...

From May 15: www.info.gov.hk/gia/general/...

And it wasn’t just the Crick… we had huge institutional expertise in the UK as the pandemic washed up on our shores, and it was all buried. Buried beneath no plan, and then a plan that would involve companies with no track record pocketing our past taxes and future taxes.

I strongly adhere to the view that, while we should accept that it is better than nothing, we should vociferously deplore how pathetic and inadequate and democratically abhorrent it really is.

In the 19th century, before vaccines and before regulations and infrastructure ensured safe water and environments, 40-50% of US children didn't survive past age 5. The heartbreak of losing a child was so common, it became a central theme in Victorian novels. getpocket.com/explore/item...

5 years on: The countries that never locked down for Covid www.bbc.com/future/artic... Sum: complex! So many social, political, healthcare variables Eg: In Sweden "substantial voluntary restraints enacted by people in the country appear to have replicated some of the effects of a lockdown anyway."

When I was in my twenties, I was repeatedly denied a medically necessary hysterectomy because I might “meet a man who wants kids”. I was left completely disabled, forced to undergo six surgeries, multiple blood & iron transfusions to preserve a diseased uterus for a HYPOTHETICAL child. 🧵

🚨 New study reveals that when used to summarize scientific research, generative AI is nearly five times less accurate than humans. Many haven't realized, but Gen AI's accuracy problem is worse than initially thought.

Cf Nuffield’s children’s admission rates- 2024- now adults ‘25 too. Kids have free rx- look at that take off at IMD decile 5 !! The deprivation link differed++ from other LTC in childhood like epilepsy & diabetes . Our NHS care for all-age asthma isn’t working . I’m on a mission #PrimaryCare

Lawyers accused of citing cases that do not exist in two recent High Court actions have been warned that judges may initiate contempt of court proceedings against them. If found in contempt, they could be punished with imprisonment. rozenberg.substack.com/p/the-perils...

Are you on Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Employment Support Allowance? UK govt will compel banks to hand information to it about your money. You can't prevent it even if you never committed fraud. Same won't apply to PPE, tax, subsidy fraudsters, corporate crooks, disqualified directors.

‘The fans just circulate hot air’: how indoor heat is making life unbearable in India’s sweltering cities #Climate

typical corrupt science

Why does “learning to live with covid” mean accepting repeat infections as inevitable? Why does it mean throwing the vulnerable to the wayside, unsafe healthcare & mass disability? That’s not “living with it”. That’s giving up We need to adapt. Clean air, paid time off, masks in healthcare.

This is beautiful. The joys of non-qualification-focussed adult education before its deliberate destruction.
