Vaccines save lives. That’s it. That’s the post.

oh yeah, also there’s this lurking on the horizon

Pope Leo XIV called Wednesday for humanitarian aid to reach the Gaza Strip and for an end to the “heartbreaking” toll on its people, as he presided over his first general audience in St. Peter’s Square. religionnews.com/2025/05/22/p...

📢 Data we've published today shows the positive impact of the #Flu vaccine last winter. The figures are encouraging, but many more could have been protected if more eligible people took up the free flu vaccine. www.gov.uk/government/n...

People with alexithymia often have trouble naming their emotions or sometimes even feeling them if a therapist asks, "How are you feeling today?" our heads may implode with frustration! Instead consider the question: If I had to pick a word to describe my mood, what would I say? & start there 🌈

Tlaib genuinely believes this which makes the deranged attacks on her by people with the gall to call themselves 'liberals' all the more revolting

These children don’t understand phrases like “means testing.” They don’t know the words “adjusted gross income.” All they know, is that in the week leading up to the food stamps, they eat ramen. On the day they get their food stamps, they eat spaghetti and meatballs. www.patheos.com/blogs/steelm...

I do hope the Government reconsider making NHS communications the continued focus of ‘budget slashing’. The NHS communicates with 1.5 million staff and with the entire population as citizens and patients. The NHS communications profession is vital, valuable, efficient and adaptable 1/2

Netanyahu "going for it" - Ground operations to occupy most of the strip to start "in next few days" - Northern Gaza to be ethnically cleansed entirely - Criminal "aid distribution" plan to start Sunday - Appoints new shin-bet head - right wing extremist general - against court orders

US descends further into the abyss. Rest of the world gets great students. If UK gov wasn’t imitating nonsense from across the pond, our universities would be chasing credit transfers.

What Vinay Prasad is proposing is scientific misconduct that would violate legally-mandated institutional review board review in the United States. He has never conducted a randomized control trial. He is not a scientist. He is a fraud. They are mandating this to block approval, not encourage study

Should patients seen in #SDEC #AmbulatoryCare receive #VTE prophylaxis? Our data #WarwickMedSchool @susie-shapiro.bsky.social show VTE rate in SDEC as high as hospitalised patients. Ability to ambulate does NOT equal reduced VTE risk. @ukhahsoc.bsky.social www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Spire Healthcare has announced plans to cut around 400 hospital-based jobs affecting both clinical and non-clinical roles. Equivalent to around 2.5% of its workforce.

The six-foot rule may have first appeared during the flu pandemic of 1918-19, when military officials observed recruits were less likely to get sick/die if their beds were six feet apart. There is a long precedent for these recommendations.

this week on Cool People Who Did Cool Stuff I talk about the origins of habeas corpus and I draw the history of English Common Law not to rich people mad at the king and creating the Magna Carta, but the "dark ages" peasants who practiced traditional decisionmaking and local democracy.

It has become impossible to search my Gmail inbox for specific words. Gmail instead returns results for all sorts of vaguely associated words that it thinks I might have meant to type. There seems to be no way around this. This is a company whose success was built on providing useful search results.

Early in my career I used to find working with people who were recurrently suicidal pretty hard. This is some of the stuff I wish I’d known back then. www.beamconsultancy.co.uk/the-blog/202...

'Reform UK’s pledge to remove all low-traffic neighbourhoods from the council areas it controls looks to be achieved in record time after the 10 local authorities said they do not actually have any in place.' www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

4.5 million children are living in poverty. Without targeted policy, this is set to rise to 4.7 million children. Removing the two-child benefit cap would lift 340,000 children out of poverty by the end of the parliament. Watch Anushka Asthana on ITV Peston 🔽

The dismantling of Sure Start under David Cameron was one of the greatest acts of social vandalism this country has seen. Then add in the economic vandalism of Brext...they truly were one of the worst governments. Starmer should reinstate Sure Start.

The Impact of Austerity on Mortality and Life Expectancy https://osf.io/7d4ac This paper studies the impact of austerity measures implemented by the UK government after 2010 on life expectancy and mortality. We combine administrative data sources to create a panel dataset spanning from 2 #sociology

The cross-party group, chaired by Labour MP Debbie Abrahams, has expedited the conclusions of a report into the reforms - and has said they should not go ahead without a comprehensive impact assessment. HERE: www.itv.com/news/2025-05...

I'm dubious about a lot of the political tea-leaf-reading going on about Pope Leo, but this one strikes me as pretty smart:

Observing this with three grandchildren at the moment. GCSE grades, having distorted the teaching for the kids’ first five years at secondary school, are now consuming most of their final term. As far as I recall, GCEs were just one exam each for 9 subjects. No mocks, private tutors, or big deal.

Mostly about the US Right, but describing that ends up providing a pretty good guide to its English poor relation too.

The most immediate way to revitalise the Irish language and stem the flow of young people from rural Ireland would be to ban Airbnb.

Today is the Feast of Blessed Franz Jägerstätter, who refused to take an oath of loyalty to Hitler and was martyred. He once said, "If the Church stays silent in the face of what is happening, what difference would it make if no church were ever opened again?" He was beheaded on 9th August 1943.
