Only 44% of Canadians realize that ageism carries a serious economic toll. Ageism doesn’t just harm people—it impacts our economy too. From lost workforce contributions to increased health care costs, the toll is immense. Let’s build an inclusive economy. 🔗 Find out how: https://cstu.io/73f74b

Women #ElderWorkers are reported as having to live with more ageism in the workplace. www.womenofinfluence.ca/2024/02/26/a...

Forbes reports "AARP found that 74% of people over the age of 50 believe their age will be viewed negatively by hiring managers and it poses a barrier to landing a new job." As #ElderWorkers, let's work together to lower that barrier. #Forbes #AARP www.forbes.com/sites/lizelt...

Canadians of all ages are rooting for the #Oilers, the Edmonton hockey team that's defending our honour (spelled like this) in the Stanley Cup. And Dave Hill says Americans should be cheering for Canada too. Read his reasons and then #ElbowsUp! #OCanada!! #MSNBC www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnb...

Ageism. It hurts employees of all ages, from the young grad who can't get a job to the #ElderWorker... who also can't get a job. I've just joined this Coalition because Ageism is very wrong and like all forms of discrimination, it needs to stop.

"Older persons make substantial contributions to the economy through participation in the formal or informal workforce (often beyond retirement age)..." Too bad this conclusion is buried in a UN report and the #ElderWorkers are not commonly appreciated. www.un.org/development/...

My last post focused on how AI might discriminate against older workers (bsky.app/profile/elde...) and one tip from Nitin Deckha to counter that is to develop "uniquely human skills". 10 skills are listed and many of them will resonate for #ElderWorkers. theconversation.com/anxious-over...

AI models used in recruitment and hiring may favour younger workers. That's the conclusion by the UK's HRDirector, based on research they've gathered. So the message to #ElderWorkers is that we have to be strategic in the job search. Watch for some tips soon. www.thehrdirector.com/business-new...

North America is already suffering #wildfires and it's just May. Canadian provinces, Manitoba & Saskatchewan have declared emergencies, and our hearts go out to the people being evacuated. But BC's broadcaster #KnowledgeNetwork shows firefighters on the front lines. So many to appreciate and thank🙏

Hmm. So much for my earlier post on the idea that Trump's tariffs were on hold, and that might be signalling a return to old-fashioned Common Sense. Forget that. As you were. apnews.com/article/trum...

Do we dare to hope that old-fashioned standards of "Common Sense" are beginning to re-emerge at last?

Jay Graber, CEO of #Bluesky spoke last night in Vancouver at #WebSummit, and is quoted as saying that Bluesky is for everyone. So, I hope this platform continues to be a place where #ElderWokers can meet and learn skills to stay relevant in the workplace. Thank you, Jay! betakit.com/web-summit-v...

This moment of change is also a moment of opportunity — to think big and act bigger. An opportunity for Canada to embark on the largest transformation of its economy in generations.

US #MemorialDay honors Americans who lost their lives in service. It also brings into focus those of you who served and survived, perhaps injured and forced into retirement. But if you wish to return to the workforce, help is available. Your country still needs you. www.forbes.com/sites/hvmaca...

Is Kermit the Frog an #ElderWorker? Well if the sorely-missed Jim Henson created him in 1955, that means he's been on the job for 70 years. So Miss Piggy would no doubt agree that he's a wise, hard-working elder, who even makes inspiring commencement speeches. Ribbit! www.msnbc.com/top-stories/...

The government of Denmark has just voted to increase the retirement age to 70. For people like me who believe that retirement is a quaint, irrelevant construct, this may not rock your boat, however there's criticism that is captured in this BBC article. Thoughts anyone? www.bbc.com/news/article...

Billy Joel is not retiring! That's the CNN message that caught my ear today. At 76, Billy Joel is a much-admired #ElderWorker, whose music is enjoyed worldwide. And he's just stepping back to deal with a health issue. Looking forward to more from the Piano Man soon! www.cnn.com/2025/05/23/e...

Why did I flag William Shatner (bsky.app/profile/elde...) and Ursula von der Leyen (bsky.app/profile/elde...) as successful #ElderWorkers? Each followed their passions, and while not always good advice for youth, this shows older workers succeed when they do what they love: aier.org/wp-content/u...

A still young #Elderworker, is a woman I've admired for many years: Ursula von der Leyen, European Commission head. It's not so much her politics, but rather the way she's carved out a career and stands shoulder-to-shoulder with world leaders. ‪@vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu www.dw.com/en/ursula-vo...

‪ For the past 10 posts I've explained why I'm an #ElderWorker. Now I'm focusing on others who show us how to keep working with flair. Top of my list is Captain Kirk, who kept working long after he left the Enterprise and is now 94. 🙏 @williamshatner.bsky.social www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRTw...

The 10th and last reason (for now) for being an #ElderWorker is to honour my father. After lung disease forced him out of the coal mines, he worked outside as a docker until he was 77 so I could stay in school. He was widely admired for his skills, and his commitment inspires me to continue. ❤️
