Really, because these stories came before the formal movement of gothic literature, it gave gothic stories cultural precedent and artistic merit. Not only this, it gave Gothic writers a place to look for inspiration from!

More than a century before The Castle of Ortranto came out, Hamlet popularized tropes of ghosts, dysfunctional families and huge old castles all together in the same story.
You also see this in MacBeth, in dark stories of mythology and legends of royal families.
