A chapter-by-chapter spoiler intense deep dive into Gene Wolfe's "The Book of the New Sun" stewing in unhinged speculation. You cannot read a Gene Wolfe story. You can only re-read a Gene Wolfe story. http://patreon.com/rereadingwolfe

What should I read if I loved Book of the New Sun and Viriconium?

M John Harrison IIRC said fantasy genre stories like his The Pastel City and The Book of the New Sun could never be more than Sword novels. Actually that’s half true. No one claimed Pastel City (which is quite good) had broken out of its genre. Readers say this of New Sun all the time.

The novellas “The Fifth Head of Cerberus” and “Forlesen” can both be read in The Best of Gene Wolfe”. All the stories in that collection are bangers but I could compile a second collection of Wolfe stories that are just as as good. So it’s really Some of the Best.

Is this the Everyone is Severian theory?

If he wrote it in 1980, it would be five volumes— or 18 Del Rey paperbacks.

As all men, I'm a torturer I suppose. My apologies in advance.

speaking of wolfe, am reading botns rn, still, on-and-off. great stuff. though it feels more like something being strange on purpose vs how the silmarillion would prob get labeled as outsider art if it hadn't been written by a respectable oxford academic

That seems to be the most common way.
