Why do you do this to me, NASCAR? Why do you do this to us all?

Become a mechanic! /s But seriously, I don’t bite my nails anymore because last time I did, I got a mouth full of transmission fluid and gear oil (I was replacing a driveshaft). I suppose the trauma was enough to stop the habit lol. Now I just fidget with a ratchet instead. And wear gloves.

Not bad, but kinda weird and quite fun

You really need a full system diag to actually find out what’s wrong, because brake systems are weird and one small issue can cause a world of problems. (Took a course specifically on auto brake systems, trust me, they’re finicky.) Best you can do is have a reputable shop hunt the real problem down.

Now, I cannot say anything definitively, as I obviously cannot see the car or diag the issues myself, but it sounds like it could be a multitude of problems - seals, ABS, booster, master cylinder, calipers, even something as simple as someone left the caliper bleed valve open.

I’d say take it to a different shop. It really doesn’t seem like they’re running proper diag on the brake system, and instead are just acting as parts cannons.

Does it still have full power? If it’s an issue with the brake booster, usually you’ll have engine vacuum issues as well. Any codes?

That noise honestly has me stumped. I don’t know anything in the brake system that could make that kind of noise idling. Unless you have electric or hydraulic assisted braking instead of traditional vacuum assist? But I don’t know of any Mazdas with those, most cars have standard vacuum assist.

Make/model/year? That’s an extremely weird sound for anything in the brake system to be making. Can you get a picture of the master cylinder and brake booster?

Brake jobs are also surprisingly simple (as long as it’s not a more modern FWD car with the parking brake that’s integral to the caliper piston), so you may be able to do the work yourself and avoid paying labor costs.

…probably separated from the backing plate and are scraping the rotor, and you need to have it looked at right away. You can probably climb under with a flashlight and check.

Sounds like a really bad pad or rotor. Could potentially also be wheel bearing, but those usually scream instead of scrape. If you’re hearing it while breaking, get the pads/rotors done at earliest possible convenience. If you’re hearing this with no brake application, it means the pads have…

I wanna see him take someone his own age. Doesn’t even have to be a professional fighter - I bet Cole Custer would whip his ass. (Shown: Custer laughing after getting punched by Chandler Smith.)

Ah, that sounds about right. Sudden loss of braking power is usually a fluid issue, except in cases of total catastrophic failure of the system. Glad everything is okay!

Do you still have normal brake application force? Are there any strange noises, like grinding or squealing? You might need pads, you might just be low on brake fluid.
