You can only presume that Trump & his cronies make an absolute killing every time the markets balk at his latest tariff tantrum. And another one when he inevitably backs down. Jimmy Carter putting the family peanut farm in a blind trust for the duration of his Presidency feels very, very far away.

From today Michael Gove will disgrace the House of Lords. I have described him in sworn evidence as a "deliberate and disgraceful liar". goodlawproject.org/covid-inquir...

It seemed completely mad that the (esteemed) Crick Institute offer for early testing was not even responded to, Especially if it rolled out a testing protocol and was the lead institute of other organisations using their protocols.

💔😡😷💔😡😷💔😷 @michaelrosenyes.bsky.social responds to the ‘Island of strangers’ comment. #poetry #immigration #humanbeings

Worst is thinking migration tap to be turned on and off for our benefit or to indulge voters rather than seeing immigrants as individuals with agency, choices and rights.Integration ought to be about helping people to take part rather than singling people out and making them perform arbitrary tasks

“Only ten years ago we were the best in the world in the annual LGBTI Rights Ranking. We’re now 22nd... This is not just an embarrassment abroad – it’s also a tragedy at home for tens of thousands of people struggling to live lives of quiet dignity.” goodlaw.social/5mgp

This idea that just because people aren't currently employed you can get them to do social care work. 🤦‍♀️ Early years is a role with lots of care aspects and similarly low wages. But we still struggle to recruit because (a) it's tough work and (b) you have to actually *care* about the children!

The real tragedy is that Island of Strangers would have made a perfectly decent title for a Booker -nominated novel and they've spaffed it on nativism instead.

I’m one of those dodgy immigrants who came here on a spouse visa and got indefinite leave to remain after 12 months. The incalculable harm I have done to the UK includes dedicating my life to public service, educating thousands of British young people, and paying more tax than I’ll ever get back.

My daughter receives world-class care from the paediatric T1D team at @LeedsHospitals It's not a service to be cut. It's the standard of care that the entire #NHS should be aiming for This is not the way forward @wesstreeting.bsky.social @rachelclarke.bsky.social www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

As Dying Matters Awareness Week comes to a close, I want to highlight a vital NHS role that often goes unseen but leaves a lasting legacy: the Specialist Nurse in Organ Donation (SNOD). www.linkedin.com/posts/antony...

Confronted with a choice of cutting taxes for second homes owners or funding eg youth clubs for working class kids Farage chooses... 👇🏻

Looking forward to this show, I like him and I love Scandinavia, particularly Norway but also been to Sweden and Finland. @grahamgeog.bsky.social bet you’ll like this too.

Whilst it might not feel like it, the best thing that could have happened to the U.K. was the Reform Party’s success in the local elections. For the first time ever they’re solely responsible for the ensuing catastrophe that’s inevitably incoming Here’s Richard Tice talking utter Wham bars Dick

*very* cheeky of the Guardian to illustrate this with a picture of Farthing Down, a site of special scientific interest and thus absolutely not the sort of horrible scrubland the mayor's talking about here

To honour VE Day, we should reflect on the ambition that came out of WW2: “to recreate the European family, or as much of it as we can, and to provide it with a structure under which it can dwell in peace, safety and freedom. We must build a kind of United States of Europe.” Churchill, 1946.

Just for fun, let me tell you about somebody you've probably never heard of, but who was once one of the most famous people in England, a national hero, a disgraced fraudster, and an astonishingly accomplished piratical maniac. He led quite a life. (1/53)

Prisons minister vows to end ‘toxic’ cover-up culture in England and Wales

FUN FACT: Since 2019, Nigel Farage's Reform has taken more than £2.3 MILLION from oil and gas interests - making up an astonishing 92% of the party's donations. Reform are NOT for ordinary people. They're in the pockets of the big oil lobby.

The best way to honour the generation of 1945 would be to rebuild the NHS and the welfare state they voted overwhelmingly to bring about

Child poverty in the UK. A young child hospitalised with malnutrition leading to the loss of all her teeth. Years of austerity, real wage cuts, profiteering, two child benefit cap, cuts to public services take toll. Govts appease the rich, blight lives of many. archive.ph/IwH73

It is great that we are searching for life on other planets. Rather less good that we are destroying so much of it on our own. My latest Yorkshire Post column www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/opinion...

“Poverty is not just a statistic. It’s a child going to bed cold. It is a student falling asleep in class because they had to work after school.” Words from Bigun, an Oasis Academiy student in the report published with the Childrens Society. Read here it: www.childrenssociety.org.uk/information/...

Trump imposes 100% tariff "on movies coming into our country that are produced in foreign lands". They are a "national security threat" to the US apparently. Other countries are bound to retaliate. Will someone will make a movie about nationalist madness?

Thousands upon thousands of children with irrecoverable injuries…lost limbs, head injuries…(let alone death). “This is an abomination and it has to stop”

Can you ever imagine a US President thanking Native Americans in their victory speech? Anthony Albanese, "And I acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on we make.. And I pay my respect to elders, past, present and emerging, today and every day" Well done Australia

As we mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, the greatest thing you could do to honour those who fought & died is show your support for the European Convention on Human Rights. It was set up after World War 2 to prevent anything like it happening again. Among members, it has so far worked.

This gets papered over as old man yelling at clouds but this is impeachable by itself. Greenland is our ally which has allowed a continual U.S. military presence since WWII, including a vital part of our missile defense and space surveillance. Threatening them is unacceptable.

#JoinAUnion now: ideological purging of public employees to fit a dystopian and blatantly wrong agenda has jumped the Atlantic and is here with us now. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

Great piece. It's a basic feature of populism that it can campaign but it can't govern. On a smaller canvas, counties which have just elected Reform councils are about to find that out.

Karoline Leavitt says Amazon displaying the cost of Trump tariffs on products for sale is a hostile action, even though it just shows customers not China, pay

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt says she will speak to Trump and the National Security team about whether the US can offer political asylum to British citizens fleeing UK free speech laws. Reality: UK law does not restrict free speech - only incitement to hate, violence and terror.

My five poetry workshops here, for teachers, children, school students or anyone, have just passed in toto 100k views. I hope people are finding them useful: www.youtube.com/c/MichaelRos...

Any trade deal negotiated with Trump should be put to a vote in Parliament, especially when British farming, online safety and our NHS are on the line. Labour’s own policy paper from 2021 called for Parliament to have a vote on trade deals. We must now hold them to their word.

Tory MP IT Support

UK political funding laws are not just a disgrace. They're actively anti-democratic. They openly encourage foreign wealth, which is not answerable to the laws of this country, to buy influence over people who should be responsible only to our own democracy. Labour's failure to act is indefensible.

Another great thread by @writingrocks.bsky.social The current idea that small children have to wait to set off on writing anything complex till ‘the basics’ or ‘foundations’ are in place seems so ill-judged to me, misunderstanding the vital importance of writer’s intentions & meaning-making. 1/

Vaccines save lives. Pass it on.

It’s clear; Trump’s pressure on Zelensky and Russian terrorist attacks. They are coordinated with the same purpose; to give Russia what it has taken illegally by force and call it “peace”. A mockery.

This is what we all feared. The United States and Russia bullying brave President Zelensky into a terrible deal. Time for the United Kingdom and Europe to stand up to Trump and seize the Russian assets so we can go it alone.

2025 Book thread 1. Loved this! Funny throughout but with a powerful message about authenticity and colourism. Would recommend

Israeli forces have now dropped more explosives in Gaza than fell on London, Dresden, and Hamburg during the Second World War. The region’s hospitals have not been spared; most are no longer functional. Clayton Dalton writes about the devastation.

The right-wing press has spread a load of baseless falsehoods about heat pumps. That’s the main reason why the technology is politically ‘controversial’. By banning Evan Davis from doing a podcast about heat pumps, the BBC is dancing to the tune of people pushing out blatant misinformation

Breast cancer diagnoses rose by over 300% between 1973 and 1992. Was there a breast cancer epidemic?! NO. Mammograms were implemented for screening in 1976. PREVALENCE is a function of being able to correctly diagnose something. This is also about autism.

We live in a country where this didn’t make the press.

I feel increasingly disconnected from the party I voted for and had such high hopes for. Did we give them a mandate to cos-play Reform-lite? I want them to lead and argue for their vision instead of chasing polls. Oh and charge me more income tax instead of penalising kids & disabled people

This is a really excellent article full of detail and insight. I wish all the people who oppose trans rights would read it.

Pope Francis’ passing is a profound loss to millions across the world. He was a leader of compassion and courage, speaking up for those in need and calling for peace in a world too often divided.

Here’s a thread on how I cut household bills by £240/month. When I was on parental leave I had the time to research and switch every contract to cheaper and better services. It’s a bank holiday so if you’ve time, do any of these and save ££. (Referral codes included but I use all of these myself.)
