I'm hoping for counter-conspiracy theories. "EXPOSED! QAnon revealed to be psyop to distract from Trump's affiliation with known pedophiles!" "Mass shootings an NRA plot to incite fear and sell more guns!" "Turns out the only chemical that turns frogs gay is spray-on bronzer!"

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's still tough for them, but they have far more allies today than they did back then. 20 years ago I'd have been afraid for their safety just walking down the hall. Kids got bullied just for SEEMING gay in ways I've never seen the past few years.

Hey now, I won't be 38 for another few days! But yeah, I work in a high school and homophobia especially was much more prevalent when I was that age. I see openly gay/trans kids being mostly accepted, and I think there's no way they wouldn't have been CONSTANTLY hassled back in the 90s/00s.

This is why it's time we reject calls for unity and civility with Trumpists. This is the world they voted for, three times now. No more trying to keep the peace at Thanksgiving dinner; lay this at their feet and hammer them until you break through to the tiny bit of them that can still feel shame.

You've got to directly tie the tariffs to Trump, though, or they'll bury their heads in the sand and let the right-wing propaganda machine blame Democrats as usual. They need to feel BETRAYED by the con-man they voted for and the GOP as a whole.

Could be referencing lithium batteries in EVs, could be a conspiracy theorist who thinks the Dems are putting lithium in the water supply to create a more docile population. Could be both!

It's still hypocritical, but one of the reasons you see so many Virginia vanity plates is that they're INCREDIBLY cheap. I think it's like $10 more than a regular plate. Perhaps this guy feels spreading his anti-government message is worth such a small sacrifice to the tyrannical DMV.

The way to foster unity is to aggressively prosecute the people who break the law in service of division, even (especially!) if they're rich and powerful. Put Trump's crimes on full display, air all of the evidence in public, and lock him away for good.

(BTW, anyone fact checking this on Google, do it in an incognito window or all your targeted ads for the next 90 days are going to be...interesting)

Especially if the bulk of it is just from buying up whatever was cheap. The top result on Google for .22lr is just over a nickel a round. There are plenty of pawn shops out there with sub-$200 guns available. It's definitely a big stockpile, but maybe not a crazy expensive one.

I sincerely hope you never have an elderly family member taken advantage of by a scammer. Unless of course it's their fault you're like this.

More nerdy football metrics! Please! I can't be the only fantasy junkie who's still missing that kind of content from Twitter.

Was Trump one of the people who needed medical attention? Are we sure he didn't forget where he was?
comment in response to post
I'm always a fan of option #2. I once briefly hosted a Puggle until we managed to locate his family, and we called him Moloch while he was with us. His "real" name was apparently Snuggles, but I think he liked Moloch better.

He's a firefighter. At *Disneyland.* I'd bet my next paycheck he loved what he does. If they made him retire he'd probably be gone in a year. Some people live for their work, and that's valid if it makes them happy.
comment in response to post
There are people out there who legitimately love what they do. I suspect "Disneyland Firefighter" has a higher-than-average share of those people.

Nobody is really on the fence about Harris vs. Trump, but I do think there are those who are undecided about voting at all, and a smaller minority who are considering a 3rd party candidate. Those are the ones who can still be reached if they can be made to understand the danger.

He did. This is the part immediately before the screen shot at the top of the thread. He told her a week before, then just let it play out. But even in the most charitable reading he's still a jerk because he set her up to fail for THIS event.
comment in response to post
I read the original reddit post. He HAD been habitually telling her everything started 45 minutes earlier so they'd actually be on time, told her he wasn't going to do that anymore, and picked this occasion to stick to his guns. I don't blame him for being sick of it, but this was not the way.

This is a pretty compelling read. I may have been wrong here. It's strange to think I had too little faith in voters, and I still worry that "Rs lose when they support anti-trans policies" is different than "Rs lose BECAUSE they support anti-trans policies," but you've given me a little more faith.
comment in response to post
Somebody else replied with a long, but pretty compelling article making this exact point. I am ready to believe I had slightly too little faith in humanity on this one.

The only way it stops is if these people face actual consequences. They need to be prosecuted, and aggressively. Send a few of the more prominent voices to prison and watch the rest scurry back to the shadows.

I would love to be wrong about this, and maybe there are other ads I'm not being subjected to that are more anti-trans in general that'll hurt the GOP more than help them, but it's not what I'm seeing (and I didn't see this angle of attack in '20 or '22).
comment in response to post
The ads I've seen have all focused on Harris supporting gender affirming care *for prisoners.* It's that last part I think is going to hit. Lots of people with a live-and-let-live perspective on trans folks will still look at that as wasting taxpayer money on elective medical procedures.

Account was apparently created on January 7th, 2021. I wonder why they never used it before?
comment in response to post
To be clear, I don't think it's going to be enough to matter and I think Harris wins by a greater margin than Biden did, but if I'm wrong I think we're going to find out the "She's working for they/them, he's working for you" line resonated with a lot of relatives we only talk to at Thanksgiving.
comment in response to post
There's also a Certain Type of Guy looking for any excuse not to support Harris, and this is *exactly* the kind of thing they like to regurgitate to justify their belief that BOTH parties totally suck, man. Who knows how many would've actually voted for her, but it's going to shift some of them.
comment in response to post
I think we underestimate the efficacy of these ads at our peril. They're not going to swing Harris voters to Trump, but I'd bet they play really well for a lot of the frustrated former Republican voters who would otherwise sit this one out or vote 3rd party instead of voting for Trump.

I'm in Virginia and see Trump ads every time I watch football. It's always the "Kamala Harris wants to give felons free sex changes" one lately. I'd like to think he's wasting his money.

I once worked as a cashier in a grocery store. We had a rack of cheap DVDs for $9.99. One week they were advertised on a "Buy 2, get 1 free" sale, but really they just rang up as $6.66. I lost count of how many people had me put them back when they saw the price on the register display.

Low information voters don't understand that Trump and the GOP are responsible for abortion bans, because they didn't happen until Biden was in the white house. This is the message Dems need to be hammering during every NFL, MLB, and NBA commercial break from now til November.

Have all teams in each division go on bye the same week. Have them play on Thursday night when they come back from their bye. 16 division rivalry games across 8 Thursdays, with teams well-rested and with extra time to prepare; Thursday is suddenly the BEST football night instead of the worst.

Daniels figured out how to connect with his receivers on big downfield throws, and all of a sudden the Commies have a multidimensional offense. I don't think they're GREAT, but the Bengals clearly hadn't planned for it and they struggled to adjust.

A lot of progress could be made if the police shifted their mission from "law enforcement" to "public safety." Dramatically increase their training requirements. Make them all qualify as EMTs, and spend *at least* double the time allotted for combat/weapons training on deescalation techniques.

I've had two people use my number as their standard fake, but all I get is spam, debt collectors, and, once, a text about a restaurant reservation (which I was happy to cancel). Oh, and offers to buy their house, complete with full physical address. Be careful giving out fake numbers, folks.

I swear this was the biggest reason I had such a hard time quitting. I finally succeeded when I decided to just go outside with the smokers but not actually smoke. It was easier to deal with the nicotine craving than the social withdrawal. 12yrs later I'm still smoke-free, but still join the ritual.

I grew up around guns, spent a huge part of my adolescence hunting, and used to have a concealed handgun permit (now lapsed). There should ABSOLUTELY be a licensing process for gun ownership, it should not be easy, and it should require proof of ownership of a gun safe.

I'm in IT. We have a system that has no 'show password' option AND doesn't have you confirm your new password when you change it. I have had to reset some users' passwords 5+ times before they managed to set one they could replicate. This isn't their fault -- it's inexcusably bad design!

That movie has three or four solid ideas that could've been great on their own, but trying to do them all at once meant they were executed as poorly as possible and thus utterly wasted. And I'm not sure that wasn't intentional.

I wonder how many of the consistent third-party voters can actually be won over? It's anecdotal, but I know several who went from "both parties are equally bad" to "this guy is an actual monster and I have to vote against him" in 2020; surely they could've been counted as "undecided," right?

Is there some reason NOT to mirror your messaging on all the social media platforms? I can understand not abandoning Twitter (there are still plenty of less-online folks hanging around), but why not simply post everything to Bluesky/Mastodon/Threads/Instagram as well?

He looks at elections the same way a spoiled child looks at a game: anything that doesn't result in his complete, unqualified dominance is "cheating," and if no excuse for his failure presents itself he'll simply make one up.
