An interesting and infuriating little NIMBY thread about a small village in France where a man is against wind energy for all the worst possible reasons.

Down in the Algarve region today, and decided to catch a local train to the Spanish border at Vila Real de Santo António! 🇵🇹 These CP 0450 units are to be replaced imminently, with an electrification project nearly complete on the Algarve local routes.

Please give a high speed rail Bluesky welcome to @superalbs.bsky.social As Jon Worth puts it - one of the friendliest rail Youtubers around! Worth a follow!

One of the friendliest rail YouTubers is now on Bluesky: @superalbs.bsky.social He even said hello in the dining car of a train I was taking on #CrossBorderRail a few weeks back!

Early in my journalism career, Billmoyers.com used my story as a source for something they wrote. If you want to know how to properly give credit to independent journalists when using their work, you can't get much better than how they did it.

“Someone with a 1-hr car commute needs to earn 40% more to be as happy as someone with a short walk to work. On the other hand, if someone shifts from a long commute to a walk, their happiness increases as much as if they’d fallen in love.” #CityMakingMath 50 reasons to want more walkable cities.

“We’ve got too many passengers!” SNCF and Hauts de France: let’s limit how many can take the train - by imposing compulsory reservation on regional trains! FFS! 🤬 This kills any flexibility. Boost your capacity! Behave like a sensible railway! www.ville-rail-transports.com/ferroviaire/...

Thread: Each week I run a simulation of Australia’s main electricity grid using rescaled generation data to show that it can get very close to 100% renewable electricity with 24GW/120GWh of storage (5 hrs at av demand) Results: Last week: 97.4% RE Last 200 weeks: 98.6% RE (1/5)

UK’s £2bn energy plan cuts costs for big industry—but leaves SMEs behind. ECI’s @samhampton.bsky.social & @janrosenow.bsky.social Rosenow explain why small firms need more support to go green. ⬇️Read more: theconversation.com/uk-plan-to-c... #EnergyPolicy #NetZero #SMEs #ECI

Wow ☀️ ☀️ ☀️ 🇨🇳 198 GW new solar capacity was added in China from January to May 2025 +93 GW alone in the month of May as developers rushed before the new RE pricing policy kicks in

Thermal batteries are game-changer for clean, resilient energy—storing excess renewables as heat (up to 1,500°C!) for industrial use. They’re becoming more cost-effective, are scalable and key for decarbonizing industry. I’ll highlight this tech tonight in my keynote at Catalisti in Antwerp.

Interesting "European high-speed rail network master plan" delayed? 🤔 It's on the Agenda for the College of Commissioners in May, to come out in early July polit-x.de/en/documents... But has disappeared from June's equivalent document polit-x.de/de/documents...

This helps explain the reality of the much-hyped gas build out. "...Texas’ grid operator to tally 108 proposed new gas plants and 17 expansions. That includes four projects currently under construction, 33 that have received permits but haven’t broken ground and 98 that are proposed."

Just watched the Netflix documentary about the Titan disaster, in which my old classmate Hamish Harding died. How that was allowed to happen…

🚆 Today is 2025 #CrossBorderRail Finale Day 14 - 23 June - Arrival of night train, Hamburg - Frankfurt (Main) – Homburg (Saar) – Bliesmengen-Bolchen Yes, I was meant to be back in Ravières today, but I am not going to manage that.

China now has 1 terawatt of solar capacity. For reference, the entire US power grid has 1.3TW of capacity.

Yesterday I published a bit on how the US LNG bubble is ending. I mentioned the Mexico Pacific project specifically as it was going to be supplied by Permian gas. @ieefa-northamerica.bsky.social just published a new piece on the project including an image of their corporate address. 😀

We are completely and utterly unprepared for what is happening *right now* at ~1.5ºC of heating. Never mind what is coming, as we race headlong to crossing 2ºC. (To stand a remote chance of staying below 2ºC global emissions must fall by 5.5% in 2025 and EVERY year thereafter until 2030)

Happy Pride! Rail electrification is for everyone.

A Gudiña-Porta de Galicia has the distinction of a station where you can watch storks peck around the neighbouring meadows while your high-speed train stops. (It also has the distinction of being a single-platform high speed station, but that one’s for the geeks.)

Kid on the tube: “this train is definitely slower than the speed of light” Complainer?

A HISTORIC MILESTONE: For the first time, solar power generated more electricity globally than nuclear, making it the world’s 4th largest power source. In just 5 years, solar output nearly tripled—from 79 TWh (Apr 2020) to 233 TWh (Apr 2025). The energy transition is speeding up. @ember-energy.org

🇫🇮 🤷‍♂️ 🇸🇪 🤨 🇵🇱 😡 🇭🇺 😭 All across Europe eh, Trainline? (Those were just the examples that came to mind) #CrossBorderRail

ICYMI: UK chancellor Rachel Reeves promised fossil fuel firms govt investment in carbon capture and storage - prolonging the use of oil and gas - in exchange for higher taxes. Incredible scoop from @writesbright.bsky.social

How much can the 2-year running mean for the global surface temperature anomaly go down in the future from a past high point? The record drop is 0.273°C, from a past high GMST anomaly of 0.724°C (Nov. 21, 1991) to a future low GMST anomaly of 0.451°C (Mar. 26, 1994).

this is how we do it
