This. If it was anything else the statement would have been about the Cowboys deciding to move on from McCarthy vs this ‘mutual agreement’ type pr spin.
At that point Dallas thought they could agree on a number. My guess is that McCarthy intentionally asked for a high amount since he knew there was a least one suitor out there. Dallas said no thank you.
Yeah, that’s the kind of unprofessional behavior that should keep the best candidates from signing there. Primetime is a wild card in the equation, but otherwise most coaches shouldn’t want to go there imo.
I think Jerry and co. weren't sure of what they were doing last week.
I am glad they couldn't agree to terms. I would rather not relive the Garrett era of a coach hanging around too long. That being said who knows who we will end up with.
Bear fans will have a temper tantrum because they want the shiny object Ben Johnson but McCarthy is safer bet with HC experience and he can provide offensive support for a young qb
All part of the plan. McCarthy will now interview with the Saints and Bears, strike out on both of them, then come back to the Cowboys where Jerry will inexplicably sign him for 10 years / 150 million.
It's Jerry's bizarro world who knows , I'll say one thing about the cowboy fans , they're everywhere, my birth state Maine and here in Central New York, Jerry does them dirty and they still worship the cowboys
It makes perfect sense. Any discussions he had with the Bears could be leveraged against them and they were still negotiating with McCarthy. They weren't going to help him get a desperation offer in hand from the bears that they would have to match.
Why go to all the trouble of spinning the rumor mill that he was staying only to let him walk?? And even more so wait till after some of the good coaching options are gone???
Classic Dallas move—breaking up with someone after refusing to let them talk to anyone else. It’s like saying, ‘We’re done, but you can’t see other teams because we’re still figuring out if we want to break up.’
Is it possible that McCarthy wanted to move on to a place where he can be the REAL head coach? As a Cowboys fan, I truly believe most of the issues this season are on Jerry.
The best spot for McCarthy would be the Saints. They are in salary cap hell the next few seasons so this would be a spot for a veteran coach to keep the organization stable while needing to scrap the bottom of the talent pool for affordable players.
Maybe that was the spark? They perhaps seemed headed for a split, Jerry got cold feet once the Chicago request came in and was forced to make a decision either way because of it.
My thought based on this and their other contract shenanigans is Jerry is still operating on the "deadlines spur movement" axiom. Which is true, of course, but that's also the most expensive time.
They denied him the interview to make him an offer without him having a counter offer to throw at them but he probably wanted more than a year or two and they said oh ok bye
Duh- the jets, jags, cowboys- Hmmmm. All Trump worshippers, soulless maga scum. Look at Commanders after eradicating maga scum Dan Snyder and his metastases! Wishing that for our country- eradicate all maga metastases and bring in the light!
Dude wanted out. McCarthy has really never lacked for confidence when it comes to navigating the NFL's bizarre coach hiring dance. I think he gets a 3rd shot. And I'll admit I'd prefer that he not go to Chicago
Peculiar is the word I’d use. Is JJ a procrastinator? Or just indecisive? Anyway, it’s not like HC salary counts against salary cap, so a strange place to pinch pennies.
I imagine the conversation went something like: "There are very few people that are going to put up with an owner/GM situation like this one, and if you think you can find someone good who will do it without a long term deal, I invite you to try"
Jerry wanted all the media outlets to report just that. Mike was miserable at Dallas. Just look at those interviews with Jerry, Stephen and Mike. Mike = Reek
Take the Chi job and and mold Caleb, which is a better situation than dealing with Dak.
It really just feels like a "fuck you" to McCarthy on the way out. The rumors that they never even discussed a new contract or extension just further pushes that narrative.

Jerry is 2 car lengths ahead, but here comes Jim!!!
😬

Peyton: 170-105, 1 Super Bowl—> “genius”
From that lens, this makes sense. Ish.
Mike: "can you though?"
Jerry: "get out."
McCarthy is going to get better offers… from teams with better GMs and owners.
